While the Edinburgh Fringe Festival may steal the spotlight each summer, the Scottish capital is brimming year-round with hidden gems and off-the-beaten-path experiences just waiting to be explored.
One of the city’s greatest assets is its abundance of green space—Edinburgh is the greenest city in the UK, and it shows. From the heather-covered hills of the Pentlands to the cherry blossoms that brighten the castle grounds each spring, nature is always within reach. Getting outdoors and enjoying the scenery is not just easy here; it’s one of the most delightful ways to experience the city.
Of course, the classics like Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Mile, and Greyfriars Bobby are iconic—and while they’re well worth a visit, this list is for those who have a bit more time, or for anyone eager to see a different side of the city. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, here are five unique and enjoyable things to do in Edinburgh that go beyond the usual trail.

1. Spend a Day at the National Museum of Scotland (Free)
Yes, Dolly the Sheep lives here (ground floor, science section), but that’s just the beginning. The National Museum of Scotland is one of the city’s most rewarding indoor spaces, and it’s easy to lose hours exploring its expansive galleries. From ancient Egyptian coffins to cutting-edge robotics, it’s a place where you can wander aimlessly and always stumble upon something fascinating.
Don’t miss the rooftop terrace, either, it’s a peaceful spot offering one of the best panoramic views of the Old Town. It’s perfect for a break during your visit or simply to enjoy a quiet moment above the city. If you can, visit midweek when the museum is quieter, giving you more space to roam without the crowds. The cafe tucked behind the arches on the third floor of the museum is a hidden gem, serving excellent banana chocolate loaf (£3.50) and cappuccinos (£3).

2. Climb Calton Hill (Free)
Edinburgh is a city built on seven hills, with Arthur’s Seat stealing much of the attention, gaining renewed fame after being featured in the 2024 Netflix series One Day. After living in the city for four years, I can confidently say Calton Hill offers unbeatable views of Arthur’s Seat and Salisbury Crags, requiring much less effort and attracting fewer crowds. Just minutes from Princes Street, it provides iconic views over the city, the sea, and the distant hills. The monuments here, ranging from the unfinished National Monument to the Dugald Stewart Memorial, create a dramatic and unique skyline.
For those seeking more of a challenge, hiking all seven of Edinburgh’s hills is a popular pursuit among university students and locals alike.
For a day trip further afield, hop on the X27 or 101 bus from Edinburgh’s main bus station (St Andrew Square) to the Pentland Hills, just outside the city. The Pentlands offer stunning hiking routes and rugged terrain, providing a peaceful retreat from the bustle of Edinburgh. From the bus stop near Heriot-Watt University, you can easily access a range of trails that lead into the beautiful Pentland Hills Regional Park.

3. Browse and Relax at Toppings & Company Booksellers, Leith Walk (£)
Just off Leith Walk and beneath Calton Hill sits a book lover’s paradise, Toppings & Company. With shelves stacked from floor to ceiling, it’s the perfect spot for aimless browsing. Settle into a comfy armchair with a cup of tea or coffee from the café, and lose yourself in a novel. The shop frequently hosts readings and literary events in a welcoming, relaxed atmosphere. The staff are friendly, welcoming, and always eager to recommend something new.
After your reading and relaxation, take some time to explore Leith Walk itself, a vibrant stretch filled with vintage shops, indie cafes, and excellent bars. It’s a wonderful place to spend a leisurely afternoon before or after exploring Edinburgh’s beautiful New Town.
4. Walk or Cycle the Water of Leith Walkway (Free)
Stretching over 12 miles, the Water of Leith Walkway offers a peaceful route through the heart of Edinburgh. Starting in Balerno and ending in Leith, the path passes landmarks such as the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, the fairytale-like Dean Village, and the charming streets of Stockbridge, where a stop at Cowan & Sons for a coffee and a browse through the charity shops is a must. If you’re in Stockbridge on a Sunday, the local markets serve up a delightful mix of fresh produce, art, and mouthwatering paella (£7). Whether you cycle the full route or just walk a section, it’s one of the best ways to see the city from a calmer perspective. Those with an artistic eye will want to look out for the four hidden Antony Gormley sculptures that stand silently in the river.

5. Explore Jupiter Artland (£)
On the outskirts of the western side of the city, Jupiter Artland is a contemporary sculpture park set across 100 acres of meadows and woodland. This isn’t your typical gallery visit—here, art and nature are beautifully intertwined. Wander among the surreal landforms and striking pieces created by artists including Anish Kapoor, Cornelia Parker, and Charles Jencks. Dive into immersive installations, including a chance to swim in the waters of Jenks’ Cells of Life (open on Wednesdays, tickets cost £12).It’s a creative, thought-provoking escape set in the open air, an ideal remedy for a hectic week.
Jupiter Artland offers student discounts and seasonal sustainability deals, including reduced entry for those who travel by bus (Lothian Buses runs a direct service from the city centre). Not only is this cheaper, but it’s also a great way to visit more sustainably. Check their website for up-to-date information on access, ticket offers, and current exhibitions.
