Dark Water VI (after W.E.B. DuBois), 2016

“Dark Water VI (after W.E.B. DuBois)” is a collaborative project powered by artists Tim Rollins and K.O.S. and created in partnership with the Bronx museum. Inspired by W.E.B DuBois’ autobiographical work, “Darkwater: Voices from Within the Veil”, the artists taught the text to South Bronx public school children and then offered them the opportunity to respond to the issues of race, class and gender raised in the text, through the art-making process. The students created one painting each by dipping a page of text in black watercolour. Only a small section of words were left legible. The project revolves around social action and displays each person’s individual perspective despite being propelled by group effort.
