Bristol Old Vic have unveiled a membership offer with three new levels inspired by the unique stories of the historic theatre.

Memberships begin from £3.75 a month and unlock benefits such as priority booking and discounts on tickets, food, and drink. The three new tiers are named Orange, Lavender and Thunder and sit alongside the existing circle memberships.

Doug Middling, Bristol Old Vic’s head of individual giving said: “The most important element of membership is the way in which it helps to fund the work we do beyond our major theatre productions – the grass roots development of new artist, or our work with young people and across Bristol communities.”

For those curious about the stories behind the new membership levels, Orange refers to candied orange peel left behind by audiences, found during the theatre’s renovation in 2018. It also relates to the building Coopers’ Hall previously being a fruit warehouse.

Lavender is inspired by the lavender-scented perfume worn by the Old Vic’s legendary theatre manager, Sarah Macready, whose ghost is said to occupy the building.

Finally, Thunder refers to the theatre’s 18th-century Thunder Run, which is used to create the sound effects of a storm. It’s one of only three surviving Thunder Runs in the country and was last used in 2016 during performances of King Lear.

Further information about membership can be found on the Bristol Old Vic website.
