Washington DC’s Shakespeare Theatre Company are collaborating with Broadway producers to host the world premiere of Once Upon a One More Time; a musical based on Britney Spears’ music.
The show will feature iconic hit songs throughout the popstar’s career including ‘Oops! … I Did It Again’, ‘Lucky’, and ‘Toxic’.
However, Once Upon a One More Time won’t be a biographical musical depiction of Britney Spears’ life story. Instead, this show will modernise classic fairy tale characters as Broadway.com’s official summary detailed: “Cinderella, Snow White and the other fairy-tale princesses gather for their book club when a rogue fairy godmother drops The Feminine Mystique into their corseted laps, spurring a royal revelation.”
James L. Nederlander, president of the Nederlander Organization, commented on why Shakespeare Theatre Company was idyllic for the musical’s premiere.
“We love the idea of debuting this musical—filled with beloved fairy tale characters—at a theatre dedicated to the exploration of classic stories reframed for modern audiences.”
Simon Godwin, the company’s artistic director, has stated that the musical will differ from other productions that combines an artist’s songs with a narrative arc, such as Mamma Mia.
“Some folks might think it is a jukebox musical, but it is not,” he said. “This is taking classical stories and refashioning them. I felt there was a promise of excellence.”
Once Upon a One More Time will debut on 30 November at the Sidney Harman Hall, concluding its run on 2 January 2022.
