When it was first released in 2020, CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077 experienced a troubled launch. Initial critics noted the game’s various bugs, glitches and performance issues, with many feeling that Night City, the game’s primary location, was an underdeveloped open-world experience.
In response, CD Projekt Red improved the game, crafting a variety of bug fixes, free content, and paid DLC, designed to address these critiques. From revamping weapon systems to introducing new locations, it became clear to fans that Cyberpunk 2077 was a slow-burning success. Following this gradual acclaim, CD Projekt Red announced they were working on a sequel, currently code-named ‘Project Orion’, which entered pre-production as of May 2025.
With this shift in focus, many assumed the studio would stop developing its original title. However, following their recent Cyberpunk 2077 Switch 2 livestream, the studio announced a surprise update, known as version 2.3.
Associate Game Director, Paweł Sasko, addressed the announcement via X, stating that he was ‘taking care of the update personally and will communicate more, when it’s ready.” Alongside this, Global Community Director, Marcin Momot, revealed that the team will “start spilling the beans closer to the release of patch 2.3.”
While the contents of this update are currently unknown, it serves as further proof of CD Projekt Red’s commitment to its fan base. After fans stood by the game through its rocky launch and subsequent improvements, the studio appears to be returning that loyalty with continued support, even as they craft the future of the franchise.
Version 2.3 of Cyberpunk 2077 will be released on Thursday, June 26, 2025.
