It has been confirmed that Disney’s beloved 2017 animated musical Coco is currently in development for Broadway, marking the first Pixar film to be adapted for the stage.

The project was unveiled at the Disney’s Broadway Concert Series at EPCOT, which gathers a series of musical stars to sing classics from the House of Mouse canon. Before Mandy Gonzalez (Aida) took to the stage to sing the film’s iconic number ‘Remember Me’, actor L Steven Taylor (The Lion King) announced that “Coco is now in development at Disney on Broadway to become a live stage show.”

Inspired by the Mexican festival of Día de los Muertos, Coco follows the journey of 12-year-old Miguel, an aspiring musician whose dreams are stifled by his family’s generations-old ban on music. After abandoning his family in pursuit of music, he accidentally stumbles into the vibrant and colourful Land of the Dead where he must seek the blessing of his deceased relatives to find his way home.

The film is directed by Lee Unkrich and features music by Michael Giacchino. It went on to win two Oscars at the 90th Academy Awards ceremony in 2018, one for Best Original Song (for ‘Remember Me’, written by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez) and the other for Best Animated Feature.

Venues, dates, cast and creatives are to be unveiled in due course.
