EP Review: Challenge Oppression, Pursue Equality // COPE

Hardcore mob COPE formed in London in 2015. Despite this, they have had a meteoric rise, having played the Camden Barfly before it closed this year, and Camden Rocks. Their name stands for Challenge Oppression, Pursue Equality, which is also the title of their debut EP, released earlier this month.

‘Season’s Ending’ is an angry statement of intent, complete with addictive hooks. Lyrically it exposes an apathetic society “too many wrongs,  never righted / forever short sighted”, and you just want to get out and change the world.

What is great about COPE is their ability to create mean, raw breakdowns such as ‘Here’s Hoping’, providing an incredible burst of energy. Lyrically, it can be a bit weak at times: “Here’s hoping you’re coping, I don’t think I can”.

The dual guitar assault of Ross Long and Josh Bowles is brutal, every song feels like a smack in the face, the lead parts in particular being memorable on ‘Here’s Hoping’ and ‘Crooks and Thieves’. Despite this, the piano at the end of the latter tracks creates an unnecessary lull.

On the whole, Challenge Oppression, Pursue Equality is an aggressive record, which should win COPE more fans and increase their reputation. If you are a fan of While She Sleeps and Stick To Your Guns, this EP should be a worthy addition to your collection.
