The Citizens Theatre has announced the full cast of new play Moonset, which will be the company’s first production of 2023.

Written by Maryam Hamidi, the show will make its debut at Glasgow’s Tron Theatre, running from 3 – 11 February before going to Edinburgh’s Traverse Theatre from 16 – 18 February.

Moonset tells the coming-of-age story of fifteen-year old Roxy who, along with friends Gina, Bushra, and Joanne, enter the world of witchcraft in search of answers to the challenges posed by womanhood.

But a sinister shadow soon casts over the group, causing rage to spill out and friendships to fray. With tensions swiftly rising, these young women embark on a journey of self-discovery, unravelling the bonds that unite and the secrets that surround them.

Layla Kirk, who appeared in the hit ITV crime series Karen Pirie earlier this year, will star as Roxy. She will be joined on stage by Cindy Awor as Bushra, Leah Byrne as Gina and Hannah Visocchi as Joanne. Zahra Browne will also star as Roxy’s mother Shideh.

Joanna Bowman will direct the production with Eleanor Felton acting as assistant director. The play also features design by Jen McGinley, movement by Vicki Manderson, lighting design by Simon Hayes and sound design by Nik Paget-Tomlinson.

Bowman commented: “Maryam has written a play that takes young women and their lives seriously, and I am thrilled to be working with this wonderful company and the Citz to put this story and these characters on stage.”
