The National Theatre of Scotland announced their upcoming 2022 season, which features 14 different shows and events, on Tuesday.

A special live screen project of Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde directed by Hope Dickson Leach starts from 25 February. The hybrid adaptation features several cinematic and theatrical techniques to create a live filmic experience. A live event will be shown at Leith Theatre before it is streamed to cinemas across the UK.

Additionally, the theatre announced several world premieres including Orphans, James IV, and Burn. Liz Lochhead’s fierce and powerful adaptation of Medea will also break through its timeless chains onto centre stage this year.

Uma Nada-Rajah’s new play Exodus, a dark and satirical comedy that ridicules power systems, will premiere at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, before touring to Stirling, Peebles, Glasgow, Stornoway, Aberdeen and Kilmarnock.

The National Theatre of Scotland and Pitlochry Festival Theatre’s co-production Enough of Him will open at Pitlochry Festival Theatre as part of Year of Stories. It tells the true story of Joseph Knight, an African man who was brought to Scotland as an enslaved person.

Live performances are not all that’s on offer this year. Their education portal for students and teachers will showcase several of the theatre’s productions. In a bid to increase support of freelancers and the industry, the company are also creating new initiatives and partnerships, including a renewed partnership with the National Autistic Society Scotland to ensure their performances are autism-friendly.

Jackie Wylie, artistic director and CEO said: “We are working with brilliant artists, telling urgent stories about identity, politics and power, grief and family, and compelling new narratives about important characters in Scottish history who can define our sense of self and nationhood.

“Scottish theatre makers and artists have embraced language, genre, and experimentation to explode compelling stories and characters onto our stages – comedy, horror, spectacle, dance, and poetry all have their moment in our 2022 programme.”

Full details of the theatre’s programme can be found online.
