Atlus has officially announced Persona 4 Revival, a full remake of the iconic JRPG, during the Xbox Games Showcase. Details are still as mysterious as the Midnight Channel itself — no release window yet — but a teaser trailer gave fans their first look at the upgraded visuals. The remake is confirmed for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC, with a day-one release on Xbox Game Pass.

The announcement trailer teased a first glimpse of the rebuilt world of Persona 4. Shots of the school classroom, local shrine, and Inaba’s high street are interrupted by the iconic battle theme Time To Make History. What follows is a few seconds of protagonist Yu Narukami running down the street and the new title reveal: Persona 4 Revival.

Of course, fans already knew something was up. The game’s existence was all but exposed last week when Yuri Lowenthal, the longtime English voice of Yosuke Hanamura, announced on Bluesky that, despite his best efforts, he wouldn’t be returning for the remake.

His post, which has since been removed, read: “For those who keep asking, no, I will not be returning as Yosuke for the Persona 4 remake. I asked. Maybe I even begged, but they don’t want me to come back.”

Not long after Lowenthal’s announcement, more original cast members came forward. Erin Fitzgerald, the English voice of Chie Satonaka, revealed she hadn’t been contacted about the project at all. Soon after, Amanda Winn Lee confirmed she also wouldn’t be returning to voice Yukiko Amagi.

Persona 4 Revival follows hot on the heels of Persona 3 Reload, which launched in early 2024 to glowing reviews and broken social links (from lost sleep). That remake brought the 2006 classic into the modern era with an overhaul of visuals, voice acting, and gameplay systems, all powered by Unreal Engine 4. The game featured a bump to 4K resolution, ran at a smooth 60 frames per second, and introduced a host of quality-of-life improvements. These included streamlined fast travel, a revamped fatigue system, and a more dynamic and responsive battle system.

Fans can likely expect Persona 4 Revival to receive a similar treatment, if not more. There is growing speculation that Atlus may switch to Unreal Engine 5 for this project, as many major studios, including CD Projekt RED and 343 Industries, are adopting the engine for their future titles. Such a leap could bring Persona 4‘s iconic world of Inaba to life like never before, with advanced lighting, more detailed character models, and richer environments.

Persona 4 launched initially on the PlayStation 2 in 2008 and quickly became a cult favourite for its mix of traditional RPG elements, social simulation mechanics, and a gripping murder mystery narrative. Set in a rural Japanese town plagued by a series of bizarre murders linked to the “Midnight Channel,” the story follows a group of high school students who form a close-knit investigation team. The game’s themes of truth, identity, and friendship resonated deeply with players, earning it a lasting legacy.

The title received a significant boost in popularity with the release of Persona 4 Golden, an enhanced version for the PlayStation Vita in 2012. It added new story content, characters, and gameplay features, becoming a must-play entry for fans of the genre. Golden was re-released alongside Persona 3 Portable for modern platforms, including PC, Xbox, and PlayStation, in 2023, introducing the game to a new audience and likely laying the groundwork for this full remake.

“We are currently working on this project with all our passion and love,” said P-Studio director Kazuhisa Wada in a statement. “We’re confident this will be a fresh and surprising product for both newcomers and long-time fans. We look forward to sharing more soon.”

“We are currently working on this project with all our passion and love,” said P-Studio director Kazuhisa Wada, in a message to fans. “We’re confident this will be a fresh and surprising product for both newcomers and long-time fans. We look forward to sharing more soon.”

“Additionally, we are actively preparing for the future development of the Persona series as a studio,” he added. “We’re working hard to meet the expectations of fans around the world, and our progress is going well.”

His comments will only fuel speculation that Persona 6 is in active development — something fans have long anticipated. Atlus has been relatively quiet about the future of the franchise, but with a remake of Persona 4 now underway and Reload setting a strong precedent, the next few years could mark a significant new era for the series.

Pre-orders are now available for the game on Windows, Xbox, and can be wishlisted on Steam. With no release date announced yet, Persona 4 Revive is expected to release on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation soon.
