Country music hasn’t always resonated well with the UK. Besides the big names, such as Dolly Parton, country music has always been perceived as red-neck musicians, singing about trucks and beer. However, 2018 (as well as 2017) has been a particularly breakthrough year in promoting country music in the UK, with up and coming musicians, enter the likes of Thomas Rhett, Kelsea Ballerini and Carrie Underwood, breaking stereotypes and presenting country music as more accessible and relatable.

Even more recently, enter Sophia Scott. With over 400,000 subscribers on her Youtube channel, gaining millions of views of her covers of artists such as Rihanna’s ‘Love on the Brain’ and Chris Stapleton’s and David Allan Coe’s ‘Tennessee Whiskey’. Now, releasing original music of her own, her latest track ‘White Fence’ is a stand out track of the summer. Following previous singles ‘Closure’ and ‘Quit’, ‘White Fence’ continues in highlighting her incredible talent.

In a world full of political and gender turmoil, ‘White Fence’ is the epitome of female empowerment and reminds all the women out there of what is really important – self-worth. ‘White Fence’ lets women know that they can be all that they dream of being, throwing away any patriarchal ideas that still resonate today, and truly create their own path. Her vocals are strong, highlighting her passion and emotion; it’s clear that Sophia believes every lyric she sings.

The track features an undeniable upbeat tune, merging pop and country. With the likes of Sophia, along with other female singers, perceptions of country music being men singing about girls, beers and trucks is removed and replaced by the reality that country music resonates with tangible, current subjects. ‘White Fence’ is the perfect introduction to this new modern twist on country music, especially in the UK where it’s not as popular.

Sophia Scott has produced an incredible track, merging both pop and country and fun and hard-hitting lyrics,  ultimately leaving all the women out there feeling inspired at the end of the three minutes. A country artist to watch, Sophia’s ‘White Fence’ is set to get all the attention it deserves.
