May the battle for Waystar RoyCo continue, on March 26th to be exact, with the Succession season four release date having now been confirmed by HBO. Picking up from where the third season finale left us, the Roy siblings, after uniting together in Tuscany for their mothers’ wedding, found themselves unceremoniously ousted from company control by their father and backstabbed by the otherwise passive Tom, portrayed by an Emmy-winning Matthew Macfadyen.

Since the series premiered in June 2018, Succession has proven to be one of, if not the most, critically acclaimed series HBO has ever produced, winning five Golden Globe Awards and 13 Emmys over its three seasons. Originally conceived as a feature film based around the controversial Murdoch family, series writer Jesse Armstrong instead pulled focus away from adaptation and towards interpretation, intercalating aspects of various famous family dynasties as well as the inner workings of Wall Street.

With the series being named the 11th best of all time by Rolling Stone just last year, fans have been eagerly awaiting a fourth season, and the confirmation of a release date has definitely increased discussion online. Fans experienced a similar delay with the previous season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with the third season premiering over two years after the second.

In terms of the series’ future post-season four, executive producer Georgia Pritchett, also known for her work on Veep, confirmed that the series would certainly not exceed five seasons and could possibly come to an end after the upcoming fourth.

With just six weeks to go before the series’ return, what can we expect to find in it’s latest outing? In the recently released trailer, Shiv announces, “This is not about getting back at Dad, but if it hurts him it doesn’t bother me”. From such sentiments it’s clear that the Roys remain brutal as ever — a brutality we can immerse ourselves in on March 26th.

Succession is available via Sky Atlantic & NowTV.
