After years of fans speculating about the hit Netflix series’ longevity, Riverdale has finally received a release date for the show’s last season. Riverdale’s seventh season will air on the CW in March 2023 and is expected to hit Netflix at the same time.

The series has followed a multitude of varied plotlines over its run so far. However, Riverdale began as a humble teen murder-mystery show. Beginning its run in 2017, Riverdale followed a cast of young high school-age teens, Archie (KJ Apa), Betty (Lili Reinhart), Veronica (Camila Mendez), Cheryl (Madelaine Petsch), and Jughead (Cole Sprouse) as they worked to solve the murder of the school quarterback.

As Riverdale progressed through its six aired seasons, the show garnered a reputation for its convoluted and outrageous plotlines. Season six, the most recently released season, followed Cheryl as she saved the town from a notorious bad guy Percival Pickens (Chris O’Shea), backed up by her new magical powers. Cheryl used her powers to stop a comet headed for Riverdale, stopping Pickens’ plan to destroy the town. Although her plan worked, it thrust the town of Riverdale back in time to the 1950s. Only Jughead is left with the memories of what happened.

Viewers expect season seven to see the cast trapped in the 1950s while Jughead works to return the town to the present day. Speaking with Collider, showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa voiced his excitement for the final season, explaining: “Though it is not what I originally imagined, it’s kind of perfect. It’s totally surprising, and yet completely inevitable, so I’m really excited.” Aguirre-Sacasa’s anticipation exemplifies many viewers’ thoughts on the show’s trajectory. Although Riverdale has not ended up where anyone would have expected from its murder-mystery beginnings, fans are excited to find out how season seven will wrap up such a well-loved show.

Riverdale’s seventh and final season will air on March 29 2023, with the show’s finale airing on August 23 2023. UK audiences can stream the show on Netflix, which has hosted the CW show for six years.
