Coming off the back of her double BRIT nomination, London born singer-songwriter Rachel Chinouriri has released a new version of ‘All I Ever Asked’. However, this time she has joined forces with LA-based artist, sombr.
The updated track comes nearly three years after its original release in March 2022 and shows us that Chinouriri’s breakout year is only going to get bigger and bigger, with the track’s release also coming ahead of Chinouriri supporting Sabrina Carpenter on tour later this year.
Now to the actual track itself. Chinnourri’s hushed, wholesome yet equally husky vocals still very much remain front and centre but this time are paired against a slightly slower tempo, giving you more of a chance to appreciate the insightful opening lyrics, such as, “Somewhere beneath the surface / I want to find if you’re the problem or the purpose”. A line no longer lost in translation amongst a faster, more pop-based beat.
Just after the one minute mark we are introduced to sombr’s vocals, with the song reaching its ridiculously catchy chorus at the same time. They blend splendidly together with sombr’s soft and tranquil tone complementing the slightly harsher, gritty rasp that has become one of Chinourri’s many trademarks. Thus, along with the chilled down beat makes for a joyous and rather calming listening experience.
Then comes sombr’s star moment in the spotlight, his solo section in the song. Lyrics such as “You gave up on me too easily / And I always tried to make it right” and “I hope you know I adore you / So many words are left unsaid” provide much needed moments of light and shade to the track.
The layers given by sombr makes the track one to take you through every emotion as opposed to a song that previously was a song just about sentiment and loss, due to the soft coating provided by sombr’s tone and writing style.
This brings us to the final minute of the song, which brings Chinouriri’s vocals back to the centre of the track. She has a fantastic belt and showcases the versatility in her vocals but this time they blend beautifully with sombr, showing fans and commentators alike that Chinouriri is not only an outstanding indie vocalist in her own right but can be dynamite when paired with another artist.
This new release packs a punch with its flowing melody, catchy chorus, and stunning blend of two fantastic alternative pop vocals. Oh, and one last thing – this track really will reaffirm to you why it is finally the year of Rachel Chinouriri. It’s all she ever asked of you!
