Pop newcomer Kirsty Grant’s latest single, ‘Bad Boys, Good Girls’ wouldn’t go amiss amid an episode of Love Island. Shimmering with heat and an overall glossy banger, it’s easy to imagine people scrambling to Shazam her tune as it plays over a glitzy party scene.

Opening with electronic trills and reverbing bass, Grant’s vocals are initially gentle as she sings “you’re on my mind / 365 / but you don’t like me / I’m not your type”, mirroring the disappointment and hurt countless people have suffered at the hands of those fitting the ‘bad boy’ stereotype. Speaking about the song, Grant says, “It’s the typical story of thinking you can change a “bad boy” but it just inevitably ends in heart-break”, but instead of solely exploring bruised feelings of regret, Grant also explores the realisation that you can’t change someone and it’s best to just focus on your own happiness.

The gradually building instrumentation lifts Grant’s crystalline voice to glittering heights in the anthemic chorus that features a punchy beat and earworm lyrics worthy of any pre-drink pump-up playlist. A bassy electronic dance instrumental brings ‘Bad Boys, Good Girls’ to an exhilarating peak before dropping away to once again bring the focus to the blazing vocals before the satisfyingly elated finish.

Set to win the hearts of her audience with her messages of self-affirmation and self-worth, Grant’s combination of euphoric musicality and pristine vocals indelibly mark her as one to watch from the pop music scene.
