Track Review: Blonde // Maisie Peters

Last week, Britain’s rising star Maisie Peters took it upon herself to prove everyone that blondes have more fun after all. ‘Blonde’ is the ultimate post-relationship anthem; with a palatable mix of teenage angst, infectious electric guitar riffs, and fun lyrical content (quick reminder: when in doubt, a box of bleach is somewhere around), Peters continues to set the tone for the forthcoming album, which is yet to be officially announced.

“Remember how you screwed up when I was a brunette? / I don’t think you knew just what you’d done / I’ll fuck your life up as a blonde,” Peters doesn’t hold back in the chorus. And there’s certainly a sarcastic undertone to be found within her voice. The 22-year-old musician’s sharp wit further confirms why she’s one of the greatest music artists that has hailed from the new generation.

Similarly to the tracks off Peters’s debut album You Signed Up For This, ‘Blonde’ delves right into the singer’s personal life — it’s full of oddly-specific details that only a close circle would fully understand. However, that doesn’t take away from the relatability; the allegories within Peters’s lyricism can often act as placeholders, through which anyone can tweak the story to make it a little bit their own. Though offering a piece of bespoke art without losing the integrity ought to be a tough challenge, Peters rises up to it. And she does it successfully because her work represents those who are still navigating their coming-of-age journey.

‘Blonde’ is the second offering from Peters’s highly-anticipated sophomore album, succeeding the record’s lead single, ‘Cate’s Brother’, which was released back in May.
