Lightscape are a rock band from Norwich who are making waves through exposure on BBC Introducing, and a tour with Lonely the Brave. Last year, they released a self-titled mini album, a mixture of alternative riffs with progressive elements. It showcased their potential, and the band will unveil a new sophomore EP, For Present, For Past in September.
‘Blinded By the Lights’ sees the band embrace their post-hardcore side, with a rocky intro riff. They add some chopped up samples that blend nicely into the breakdown and vocalist Will Overton has increased his vocal range, which is impressive. ‘Running’, the bands’ latest single, showcases the emotion and conviction Overton puts into his vocals when he sings “You’re leaving me here, I know you got to go”. The bridge also includes a clean guitar and what sounds like reverberated claps, bringing out the ambient atmosphere.

‘You Leave Me Here’ sounds as if Lightscape have taken inspiration from Muse. Overton impressively pulls off a Matt Bellamy-style falsetto, while the band continue to employ ambient guitars. However, the refrain of “you’re leaving me here” in the chorus feels repetitive and grating. Perhaps some imagination could have been used in the lyrics to match the epic instrumentation.
On ‘For Present, For Past’, it is clear Lightscape have bags of potential, with just about enough to help them stand out. If they increase the ambient textures on future releases, they’ll gain a wider audience.
