Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another led the way for nominations at this year’s BAFTAs, one ahead of the genre-defying, Michael B. Jordan-led Sinners.

There were plenty of records broken over the night, most notably Marty Supreme’s return of zero wins from 11 nominations and the aforementioned Sinners being the most-honoured film by a black director.

One of the most popular winners of the night was My Father’s Shadow in the Outstanding Debut by a Brit and, on the flipside, the censorship of director Akinola Davies Jnr’s speech was one of the least popular events.

It wasn’t a night without controversy and the discourse continues to roll on, but rather than adding to this, let’s look at the big winners.

In the acting categories, a win for Jessie Buckley (Hamnet) was a foregone conclusion to many and this proved to be the case, her performance at the forefront of Chloé Zhao’s emotionally masterful adaptation taking it from great to brilliant.

OBAA claimed the most prizes on the night, including Best Film, Best Director and Best Supporting Actor for Sean Penn’s unforgettable character Steven J. Lockjaw. There were plenty of tears on the night for everyone associated with the film as several people on stage paid tribute to their late producer Adam Somner.

On that note, Jessie Ware offered up a moving rendition of ‘The Way We Were’ as everyone paused to remember those we lost in the last 12 months, from Rob Reiner to Diane Keaton, from Gene Hackman to Catherine O’Hara, and many more. Another huge musical number saw HUNTR/X smash their song ‘Golden’ from the beloved KPop: Demon Hunters.

Sinners’ leading man may not have prevailed but supporting actress Wunmi Mosaku was duly recognised on home soil. In her speech, she heaped praise on director Ryan Coogler who was himself recognised, winning Best Original Screenplay and also claiming Best Score on behalf of Ludwig Göransson.

Perhaps the biggest shocker was that I Swear star Robert Aramayo, having already beaten Miles Caton, Chase Infiniti, Archie Madekwe and Posy Sterling to the EE Rising Star prize, pipped the likes of Leonardo di Caprio and Timothée Chalamet to Best Actor.

Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein had a strong evening on the technical front whilst Hamnet was the Outstanding British Film in a massively stacked category and Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Value took home the Best Film Not in the English Language prize.
