Disney has released a comedy special for the long-awaited return of the iconic The Muppet Show, airing on ABC and Disney+.

It’s officially time to play the music and light the lights again, with Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, and the beloved Muppets ensemble back for the brand-new special event. Fans enjoyed music, comedy, and plenty of trademark chaos as the gang once again takes the stage of the original Muppet Theatre, joined by very special guest star Sabrina Carpenter.

The special also featured additional guest appearances, including Maya Rudolph, with Seth Rogen serving as both executive producer and guest star.

The original The Muppet Show, created by Jim Henson, originally ran from 1976 to 1981 and aired in more than 100 countries. The series became a global phenomenon thanks to its mix of vaudeville-style humour, musical performances, and celebrity guest stars such as Elton John, Johnny Cash, Diana Ross, Debbie Harry, Gladys Knight, Liza Minnelli, Paul Simon, Mark Hamill, and many more.

During its celebrated run, the show earned Emmy, GRAMMY, Peabody, BAFTA, and numerous other awards. In 1978, Time magazine even called it “the most popular television entertainment now being produced on Earth.”

In 2026, The Muppet Show marks its 50th anniversary, making this new special an especially timely celebration. All five seasons of the original series are available on Disney+.

The event has been produced to act as a backdoor pilot, with its success determining whether the franchise receives a full revival. The special was directed and executive-produced by Alex Timbers, known for his acclaimed work in musical theatre.

Veteran performers Bill Barretta, Dave Goelz, Eric Jacobson, Peter Linz, David Rudman, and Matt Vogel reprised the majority of the iconic characters, supported by a wider team. Goelz, who has been with The Muppets for more than 50 years, originated fan favourites such as Gonzo and Dr Bunsen Honeydew.

While other Muppet-related projects are reportedly in development, the fate of a full series revival rests on how audiences respond to this special. With star power, nostalgia, and a dual release on television and streaming, this may not be the last we see of Kermit and friends.

The Muppet Show aired on February 4th, 2026, and is now available on Disney+.
