Sky has announced that it will be greenlighting a new documentary series covering the iconic music competition show The X Factor.

The series will navigate what made The X Factor a phenomenon following its inception in 2004. Former judge Simon Cowell will also be joining the project.

The production company 72 Films will be producing the series, a company known to produce hard-hitting documentaries. It’s responsible for award-winning series such as 9/11: One Day in America, which won an Emmy, and The Zelensky Story, which won a Grierson. The series director will be Tim Lawton.

Not much has been revealed about the project other than that it will be the ‘definitive documentary’ on the show and that those closest to the X Factor story will be making appearances within it.

The show ran from 2004 until 2018, with it’s peak in viewership in 2010. Ratings declined in the years after, and it was put on hold in it’s regular format before being officially cancelled in 2021.

The documentary remains untitled, but X-Factor fans and potential viewers will be intrigued to find out who will make an appearance within the documentary. Some of the most prolific judges from the show’s duration include Sharon Osbourne, Cheryl, Louis Walsh, Nicole Scherzinger, Robbie Williams, and Louis Tomlinson. The show was also responsible for discovering popular music artists One Direction, Little Mix and Leona Lewis.

The show hosted its fair share of controversies, and contestants were constantly at the mercy of the British press. At its peak, it hosted guest performances from the likes of Beyonce, Rihanna, and Justin Bieber.

The executive producers of 72 Films, Mark Raphael and Clare Cameron, alongside Kate O’Hara, will be the series’s showrunners. The Executive Producers for Sky are Bruce Fletcher and Hayley Reynolds.
