  1. I agree with you that bisexuality is not well covered in the media. However, I wonder if it’s for less nefarious reasons than you might think. Are you aware of the Kinsey scale? Do I label myself as bi-sexual if I’m a 1 or 2 on that scale? Where do you think Piper rates hersef. I think our sexuality can be so fluid. I know the labels help some folks identify with a community and that’s a good thing. But I think we sometimes worry about the labels too much.

  2. I don’t know if you’ve heard of this country, but what they’ve done is spent a hell of a lot and had very low taxes by borrowing a lot.
    I think they’re called Greece?
Might want to look their situation up.

    • The situation in Greece is fundamentally different. The structure of their finances, their labour productivity and the excess borrowing caused by cheap rates offered to Eurozone members are all factors that don’t affect the UK. The comparison made by Tories is a cheap, scaremongering tactic.

  3. Great educational piece of writing Lydia. Lions, elephants and dolphins all leading horrific lives of slavery which indeed leads to death. Please all readers if you care for these creatures never take a ride on an elephant or watch a show. Never swim with dolphins and never pett baby lions they are being bred for the bullet. If you want to see them, take a trip to see them I the wild or a real sanctury. Well done Lydia thank you for raising much needed awareness.

  4. Brilliant read. I love your work and I love biebers work. Aaron Bieber Spencer. My ringtone is love yourself lol has been for a couple of months now. Hope yours is to.

    • Sorry, only seeing these comments!

Soundtrack is beyond amazing, still listen to it quite regularly 🙂

  5. Good article. I Completely agree with your insight. It was easy to read, good flow, and interesting material.
There are some typos in the text that I would LOVE to correct so that they don’t detract from your essay. Nothing mispelled, just articles either left out in some places or not needed in others.
Keep up the good work. I look forward to reading more of your stories in the future.

  6. Well ,Summer does tell Tom how she doesnt ‘doesn’t want anything serious’. But her actions say otherwise. When hey met at the bar and she dismissed the concept of Love , Tom was deflated and he left her alone. Summer was the one that made the move on him in the copy room by kissing him, knowing that he beleived in love. Why did she do that? Why did she go after a guy she new wanted an old fashioned relationship?

The second time, after he fought the guy in the bar and she got mad at him, and told him they were “just friends” her left very upset. She was the one that came to his house to make up with him. She could have let that be the end of the relationship, that could have ended things completely between them romantically, but she wanted to have him, but on her own terms despite knowing he wanted something serious.

Should Tom have pushed her away after that , Maybe, but he was in love, he wasnt thinking clearly but she was, she knew better, and took advantage of his feelings for her to get a gist buddy and no strings arrangement.

Was Tom’s perception of love immature and idealized, Sure. But Summer went after Tom, both in the copy room and coming to his apartment in the rain, when she knew she was not ready for what he wanted. If it was a guy that did this to a woman .Led her on, slpet with her when he knew she wanted something he wasnt ready or willing to give. Dumps her and is marrying another woman within months cos he suddenly realizes he was wrong about love? Come on.

Tom came out with lessons on the other end, the scales had fallen from his eyes, but that doesnt vindicate Summer was making selfish decisions in pursuing Tom in the way she did.

  9. Thank you so much juliette for this beautiful review and tribute to Sam Killing my late Grandson .
Yes he was very talented and like you have stated will be remembered for his special musical talents and also to us all his family and friends for the very special person he was so talented , intelligent with a charisma and very loving and a special charm .
Thank you again for your wonderful write up . May Sam Rip and loved and missed by us always.

    • Thank you very much for your kind comments here Linda, this means a lot. When writing it I certainly was not expecting the article to find its way to any friends and family, so I really am glad you were able to find it – I wrote it simply to show my own respects and to perhaps spread his memory a little further. Often we are unable to see the legacy we leave or quite how far this legacy stretches, and I wanted to be able to capture this. I hope you and your family have been able to find some solace over the past few months and I hope I was able to do some justice to Sam. RIP.

  10. This a great song & very addictive, the ladies have played a blinder here. Looking forward to the album.

  11. Very good review but… you missed Band of the Weekend… Animals As Leaders! Absolutely outstanding. On in The Cave when King Blues were on somewhere else ;o)

I know you can’t be everywhere but you really missed something there.

  12. Brianna you have Meatloafed me!

Literally took the words right out…

Great write up on a very exciting band 🙂

  13. Great review of this album. I’ve been listening to it all day and read all the lyrics…and your review quite accurately depicted my feelings on it as well.

  14. Rotten Tomatoes, much like IMDB, has a big issue with a built in “sample bias”. The sort of folks who contribute reviews do tend to skew towards white, male, affluent 18-45 so those best of lists to tend to reflect that e.g. Shawshank, Star Wars, Godfather etc. Correspondingly, an all female cast would never rank as high in that demographic. Though if you want a guaranteed screamer for Halloween, go no further than The Watcher In The Woods. A 1980 Disney TV movie that’ll give you nightmares for months.

  15. The song “All Mine” was originally written, recorded and performed by the band APSE on its 2009 album, “Climb Up” (ATP/R)

  16. I took a friend who doesn’t really like punk, he came out of a frank carter and the rattlesnakes gig saying that was the best show he’s ever been to,

  17. Hi, Can you give me the name of the band at the opening, th band with female vocal. I found their song was good.

    Thanks!

  18. Excellent review. Well presented & extremely informative without giving away any spoilers. 10/10 WELL DONE ??

  19. The President Wore Pearls, an Evita homage, is an excellent later period (though actually mid-period now, given the show’s longevity) episode. Lisa runs for student president, only to discover the compromises between campaigning and governing.

  20. Last night I saw Stiff Little Fingers and Theatre of Hate blasting out a great punk gig at the Waterfront in Norwich – mesmerising, alive and definitely kicking!

  21. Denis Villeneuve is the well-known director of Hollywood industry, he’s screen awarded for the movies of Maelström in 2001, Polytechnique in 2009, Incendies in 2011, and Enemy in 2014, now written science fiction movies blade runner 2049 pretty well concept well directed as well.

  22. Great insight into Paul’s psyche. I have all the Jam and Style council LPs and many of his solo works (30 something). I first saw the Jam back in 1975 at Lancaster Uni – my home town. I hope he tours the USA in the near future, I’d love to catch him in concert in the Bay area. All the best, and keep the lyrics flowing. Sincerely, Tony

  24. I for one absolutely loved Tempest, so if this is considered even better I can’t wait to listen when I get a chance…

  25. Utter fiasco in the industry! These companies are not bothered about safety, they’re bothered about money and how much they can earn. Bet you those streamers will be back online within a few weeks under a new name. It’s shameful

  26. Love this article! I’m very good at being able to differentiate my love of beauty with actual beauty. I don’t think people realise if your personality is great you instantly look 10x more appealing! Always make sure one of the first dates is me without or with barely any makeup, and it’s a real confidence boost that actually all the guys I’ve dated have still wanted to see me after so why am I wasting all that tome and money on the days I cba for makeup! 💖

  27. A lovely, lovely book and you’ve picked out nicely some of the most telling bits. One thing though, the Junior and Linnie section is set in Twenties and Thirties, not the 50s. They are dealing with the aftermath of the 1926 Crash and subsequent recession. Her brazenness is possibly all the more remarkable then.

So many great characters – the comically rude and arrogant, but not caricatured, Merrick; the permanently seething Jeannie; the hidden depths of holy Nora; Denny with his alienation and slowly revealed self-awareness; even the two largely unseen Hughs have a presence.

  28. Having just finished reading this article, I must take issue with the general premise that the government is being especially “stupid” by putting calories counters on restaurant food menus.

The author makes the case that calorie counting on restaurant menus is “one of the dumbest things” because, a) Calorie counting in order to lose weight is unscientific, and b) Calories counting can harm people with – or at risk of – eating disorders.

While it is possible that calorie counting is useless, I think the article fails to put this in its proper context.

The argument is framed as if it were somehow originally the current government’s idea that counting calories was a good idea, but this ignores the fact that calories have been displayed on foodstuffs in shops (thanks to the EU) for several years with no marked increase in rates of anorexia.

Additionally, and more ironically, the article provides examples of where calorie counting is counter-intuitive in products such as; apples and biscuits, and, Hovis seed sensation and Hovis white… all products that already carry calories counts on their packaging. It is fair assumption that most people in the UK consume more food from supermarkets than they do from eating out, so why is it so “dumb” to extend calorie counting to restaurants?

Furthermore, calorie counting is so prevalent that if I go on the NHS website to measure my BMI and I am overweight, the website will give me a rough recommendation of daily calorie intake. Should we not also be slamming the NHS for promoting unscientific nonsense and putting people with eating disorders at risk? Is there not some basis for the value of concern around calories? Is it at least possible that adding calorie counts to food before we buy it works? And either way, would it not have been more helpful to refer to existing (admittedly mixed) research on whether or not the EU’s schemes have worked (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3410024/)

It is not as if the government is not at fault with this new campaign; the opening suggestion that this move is a form of “performative bureaucracy” does seem to carry some weight. But it seems clear that the government is following quite standard procedure and hardly pushing the envelope.

Whilst I am no fan of Mr Boris and his cabinet, the guiding narrative seems to lean a little too far into ad hominem: “Well if Boris said it, it must be wrong.”

  29. See in Ireland, only people from the island of Britain are seen as British, unless they identify as such. Is the term ‘British Isles’ itself the reason so many presumably well-educated British journalists still call Saoirse Ronan et al ‘British’?

  30. Mescal’s point is very simple: he’s not from Britain/the UK/the British Isles or whatever it is you (assuming the author is British) actually call your nation. He is from a *neighbouring* nation. It’s one thing calling a Scottish person “British” or an “English person “British”, but calling someone who *isn’t* from Britain “British” is quite bizarre.

Another point to note is that Irish people don’t call the archipelago they share with the British, “the British Isles”. Adopting a neutral, more appropriate term could possibly help British people understand the boundaries of their own nation and better grasp the identity of the people who live within – I recommend Britons give it a try.

  31. Agree with your views but i will add that i found even Henry Cavill’s performance very boring and not believable. I enjoyed Sam Claflin ridiculous character a bit more.
But i pass on the last 40min of the movie…couldn’t take it more. :/

  32. Thanks for covering this subject, I was looking forward to find out more about the dispute between Epic Games and Apple. *grabs some popcorn*

  33. Hello, the author here!

Many thanks to Sam Lambeth and The Indiependent for this review. A wonderful piece of writing that’s probably better than anything in the book😊

    Thanks again, Stephen Pennell.

  34. Beautifully written review, probably better than the book! Your praise is gratefully received Sam Lambeth, thank you very much. Thanks to The Indiependent for publishing too.

  35. The oppressive fog and dulled aesthetics are great! If it had tried to change its self to be more commercial it wouldn’t have been a silent hill movie.

  36. I need to buy and read this book ASAP. Where the best place to purchase.. Purchasing from Australia..Sounds like my kind of read.. In-depth review, This guy has written a review before.. will update post, when I’ve read book as to how good it is..

    • Hello Gail, thanks for your interest.

Mr Lambeth (the reviewer) has indeed wrote many reviews before – for The Indiependent and Louder Than War amongst others. He’s an excellent writer and I’m delighted he likes my book.

If you want to purchase a paperback, find me on Facebook, Muckrack, Twitter (@StephenPennell2), LinkedIn or e-Mail me [email protected]

I must warn you though, the postage costs as much as the book! Hope to hear from you soon.

      Cheers, Stephen.

  37. I believe you have remarked some very interesting points, thanks for the post. I have read so many contents about blogger lovers but this article is truly a good article, keep it up

  38. An absolute gem of a series. Indeed, I learned much and fell in love with the eccentricities and similarities all over the world. Oh and I’ve adopted boke and dose into my vocabulary.
Wish I could pull off “Catch yourself on.”, but I’m not a Derry Girl.

  39. Well said. Those statistics about domestic abuse holiness just broke my heart. An important thing that the government should keep in mind, home isn’t safe for everyone.

  40. Psychologist Reports that Oscar Pistorius 4-Part Documentary Completely Misses Sleep Disorder (Parasomnia)

Millions continue to argue whether Oscar killed Reeva Steenkamp in a fit of rage, or whether he truly believed a dangerous criminal had entered his home. This otherwise fine documentary completely failed to emphasize that Judge Masipa underscored that the South African Court could make no sense of several glaring anomalies in the Olympian’s narrative. A compelling explanation of these profound enigmas is provided in a fascinating book by prominent Canadian psychologist Dr. Brent Willock. Oscar would have realized his girlfriend was not in their bed, and therefore that it was her who made the noise in the bathroom and, furthermore, he would have heard her yelling at him that he should not shoot–if he had not been in a state in which parts of his brain were wide awake while other parts were still asleep (parasomnia). Sleep disorders are far too little known and understood in legal and mental health circles, and by the general public. They are, nonetheless, of great interest to all. Dr. Willock’s illuminating book has been endorsed by the world’s foremost experts in sleep disorders. It provides the basis not only for understanding and forgiveness but also for launching a judicial appeal that would remove Oscar’s criminal record, restore his reputation as an inspiration to the world, and permit him to resume his humanitarian work for victims of landmines, especially children. This compelling addition to Oscar’s story–so strikingly absent in the recent documentary–would be of enormous interest and help to readersaround the world. The book by Dr. Brent Willock is entitled The Wrongful Conviction of Oscar Pistorius: Science Transforms our Comprehension of Reeva Steenkamp’s Shocking Death.

  41. I must register my disagreement with the reviewer’s simile that New Order without Peter Hook’s bass is like a ‘body without a limb’. 2015’s Music Complete might be their best record. The reviewer clearly hasn’t followed the contours of New Order’s career and subscribes to the lazy journalistic cliche that they were good back in day. Bowie produced some of his best stuff before his death, Tranquility Base Hotel is 100% Arctic Monkey’s best record and New Order are still producing absolute bangers like ‘Singularity’ and ‘Academic’. ‘Be a Rebel’ is such a tune and clearly sits alongside their work in Music Complete.

If you don’t know where to place the latest release in their oeuvre then clearly you haven’t been listening, Oxley.

  42. hi steve
just ordered your book, sounds like good read! changing the subject slightly remember me working in the sewing room on the maintenance,
    all the best spence

  43. Nice to see ‘Folk’ on there! But you’ve missed out one of my favourites: ‘The Lost Books of the Odyssey’ by Zachary Mason. Well worth a read!

  44. thanks for recommending its a fantastic piece of work and thanks for the background and some insight into the poem.

  45. Dear Issy,

A friend of mine flagged this piece up to me earlier and I just wanted to find a few moments to say how delighted I am to discover that other people admire imaginative, distinctive, exciting archive television in this way, and also appreciate when companies such as Network go the extra mile in making its available to savour and appreciate in such a manner. So good to know that there’s people out there in the world who clearly get the same enjoyment and excitement out of discovering these gems from the past as I do.

Hoping all is well with you. Thank you for your kind words. Much appreciated.

    Andrew

  46. As someone whos first experience was the movie, I am glad that I have now found that I am not alone in my confusion, bewilderment and adoration at ‘Cats’.

  47. I absolutely love this article! It spotlights a problem that people have with morality ambiguous characters and how people reduce their character down in flanderization into their most desirable trait turning a three dimensional character into a paper cut out.

  48. Yes! This song marks a return for Avril Lavigne returning to her punk-pop princess roots and her upcoming new album which will drop this year has been confirmed by Avril as a return to the genre she helped popularize which is punk-pop and she is collaborating with Machine Gun Kelly on her new album as well so 2021 looks like it will be the year that punk-pop returns in a big way.

  49. A fabulous, insightful piece by you Colton. To me, your diagnosis is important and shouldn’t be cross contaminated in itself, by not-so health fanatics.

  58. Thank you for this article. I’m currently going through constant bleeding since December 2020. I’ve been waiting to see a specialist since then as my gp has recommended the coil and a biopsy due to other issues involved. She has me taking a hormone three times a day and my emotions are all over the place. I will research more and appreciate this article.

    • Hi Heather, thank you for sharing your story. I’m really glad my piece helped you in some way. It was really important for me to share my experience and I feel less alone after other people like you have reached out and shared their own negative experiences. I hope you feel better soon. I truly understand what constant bleeding feels like. I got quite low. It’s good that you have sought out advice from your GP. Sadly, in my experience it seems to take a while before you get answers. Research was definitely my best friend throughout my experience. I wish you the best of luck in the future.

  59. I just watched this film and I thought it was amazing. This is definitely an underrated Jane Campion movie and Meg Ryan really shows depth and range with her work. Great article!

  60. In Hong Kong, where I used to live, the population is one of the most densely packed in the world, the covid stats are fairly remarkable, despite many environmental factors that would certainly encourage transmission…around 28 deaths per 1Million population giving a total of deaths at 212. What’s the chief difference? Face masks and civic compliance.

Great to see you in print, Harry, totally agree with your take on this, and look forward to reading more from you…xx

  61. The usual highly intelligent rhythm section as standard with Its Immaterial with some Joy Division/New Order style bass which is a great bonus. A sort of effortless, elegant poetic grace worthy of Mark Burgess and and there can be no higher praise than that. Which reminds me, who is the girl on the cover? I am doing a painting based on the song “Second Skin” and the film “A Taste of Honey” and could do with a Rita Tushingham look- alike as a model!

  62. This poem did save my life. I think about it when things get hard and I start trying to find bad solutions to my frustrations. It always levels me out and reasons even with the most hysterical sides of me. It’s very important to me.

  63. Thank you for the kind review. We all worked really hard on it and Im glad that you watched the film with an open mind and heart. It’s great to see a review about the film that gets what we were going for.

  64. Sean Connery Bonds were filmed in between 1962-71, and yeah of course, one was made in -83. But the coulture of those films were set in 1950’s, with the ideas and attitudes of that decade.
The movement of sexual liberation, equality between men and women and demanding world peace was fired up in 60’s but character like Bond was mainly conservative, “the weapon” of the british goverment. Sofisticetd version of John Rambo who was killing machine of U.S. goverment.
James Bond is far from the nice guy, a neccessary evil who is needed when other ways dosent work. When some one is chosen in to profession that contaisn license to kill, it takes particular type of person to carry that out. Not “Mr Rogers” but more like “Ted Bundy”

  65. A very moving poignant film – a lot of unexpected hidden depths beneath the relaxing exterior. Well worth the time….

  66. Thoroughly enjoyable read. Really good summary of the halo beta so far and good to see other people are enjoying it

  67. Yes, just watched it as well and thought it was pretty much a perfect film, without having known anything about it in advance. I did my usual Googling afterwards to see how it fared critically and was shocked to see the low ratings on RT. Anyway, it’s part of the Criterion collection so somebody must think it’s good. It’s sad to think that this may have been the death knell for Ryan’s career as she gives an amazing performance. Campion, as always, is a master at gender relations.

  68. Incredibly bad (cringe) movie though in all fairness, I did succumb to dozing through most of it so probably missed the ‘best’ parts. I’m sure this movie will enjoy being alone but never lonely in the movie library!

  69. Excellent review,Well done Alex ,but would definitely not Choose this series for a relaxing night. Keep up the good work.

  70. Everything about this list is so wrong. Series 4 was the shows and 10s strongest by far. Series 2 was one of the weakest seasons and I’m not even going to go into some of the episodes named the worse but to say boom town is the worst episode when the long game exists is beyond me. Hopefully you can improve on your lists cause this one was atrocious

  71. I’m a 60 year old female hippy and many years of GREATFUL DEAD, MUDDY WATERS, BUDDY GUY, BB KING, RL BURNSIDE, JOHN LEE HOOKER AND MANY MORE AND WORKED IN MUSIC INDUSTRY for BLUES & ZYDECO ARTIST……MY DAUGHTER TURNED ME ON TO JACK WHITE LAST YEAR AND I WAS HOOKED THAT VERY MOMENT !! HE IS DIFFERENT THAN ANYTHING I HAVE EVER SEEN. I BEGAN DIGGING AT EVERYTHING I COULD FIND ABOUT HIM. IN MY WORDS HE’S A “GENIUS” ONE THING THAT BOTHERS ME IS HEARING FANS TALKING ABOUT NOT BEING ABLE TO BRING CELL PHONES. IF THEY CAN NOT RESPECT HIM THEN THEY SHOULDN’T BE THERE !! ENJOY THE MOMENT !!! I WOULD GIVE ANYTHING TO MEET HIM AND/OR SEE HIM LIVE.

  72. It’s a staggering budget and the series certainly is having an impact. Not sure my stomach is up for the gore though.

  73. ‘The One’ is based on a German episode, but Greg Davies has just taken the broad premise rather than the associated ideas. As your review notes for other episodes, the German version is more subtle and entertaining.

  74. My issue with comphet is
1.) It feels like bi erasure. Adrienne Rich was a political lesbian and most of them did not even believe bisexuality existed.
2.) If we are going to believe that society can make you feel “straight” then we may as well believe the “gay agenda” can make you gay. For years women and men have been doing queer things despite society. The truth is sexuality is fluid. While some people do hide their sexuality to fit in, I highly doubt people’s sexuality is forced because of society.

  75. Despite all atrosities Shosha is a ray of hope as her defence mechanism is strong and she set an example for others to fight all odds for a better future.

  76. Well said! Children learn best with love and support and who doesn’t love more encouragement – like you can get from Sesame Street?! My children grew up with them and we loved them! This world is fast paced enough and children grow up too fast, give your children the chance for great quality programming, it will not disappoint.

  77. For years I performed A CHRISTMAS MEMORY with Academy Award winning actress Patricia Neal. In 2008 the two of us performed the story in the Historic Monroeville Alabama Courthouse Museum with Harper Lee in the audience. That was A CHRISTMAS MEMORY to remember forever.

  78. Fifi Rong is one of the best pop singers . Her gentle and angelic like voice penetrates the soul and calms it down. Very lovely person . I am so glad I am Fifi’ s fan.

  79. Why is she famous? She’s massively overrated. I love how critical she is of people like Eric Clapton. Mediocre? He is way more talented than her. She wishes she was mediocre. She is subpar at best.

  80. @Kev You got that right! Censorship is a key tenet of fascism. Trump called out blatant media lies, but he never called for censorship like the ACTUAL fascists did. It’s easy as hell to the unindoctrinated eye to see who the real baddies are today.

  81. I have been reading a lot about Tim Buckley through Lee Underwood. Lee definitely has some fantastic insight, here he is talking about Tim’s legacy in another interview: “He plunged into himself, the world, the music, and every performance with his total being. He gave it all to you and me and his other listeners. Very few people have enough courage or strength to do that. They live timid, driftwood lives, rarely committing themselves to any sort of creative vision. Conformity pays well. Creativity takes risks. So if you ask me, it is people who hold back out of ignorance and fear who make the big mistake, not Tim.” Inspiring stuff! As a 25-year-old singer with an acoustic guitar I am determined to get Buckley’s songs back out there to a younger audience. I’m going to start with Buzzin Fly! Thanks for the article!

  82. I am going with the name Anonymous simply because I feel more comfortable telling my story this way.

I actually found this article while doom/hope scrolling about emotional blunting. While i was at a college summer camp a month ago, I somehow ended up in a trauma-dump where I learned about the term. I’ve been struggling for years to find a term for it, I would always just say “my emotions are weaker than other peoples’.” Which, is definitely true, I don’t feel that some of my emotions are not there at all; they are all still there, just much weaker than I would ever expect. Like for instance it is very hard for me to even feel my eyes start to sting or begin to light water from sadness. Plus, I have issues with actually emoting with my mouth and eyes, which is learned can be a part of emotional blunting. Since learning about this fact, I’ve realized that I have experience this in some form for essentially all of my life.
The strange thing to me is that outside of this blunting, I have never received a diagnosis for anything that could cause emotion blunting, nor have I taken any kind of medication that could cause emotion blunting. And that honestly scares me. Because I’m simply not ready to deal with whatever is causing my emotional blunting. I will officially be a senior in high school in less than a week, so I have no clue how to move forward with the pressure only going to go up from here all the way through college. For what it is worth, I have asked my parents for some kind of access to therapy, and they said that they would look into it for me. I would look myself, but I have no clue what my parents would be willing to pay for a therapist, and would frankly like to leave that issue to them. I hope therapy can help identify the cause of the blunting, or at the very least get my foot in the door on mental health, because not only have I been dealing with emotional blunting, but also loneliness and actually having no friends for most of my elementary school and middle school years, and am starting to realize the knock-on effects of both now.

I don’t really know what I am going for with this comment. I’m just feeling kinda down about this to the point where I needed a place to vent and catalogue my feelings while they are here, and the comments section of this article felt like a good place I guess.

  83. I was exhausted after watching The Gray Man – if you love action packed movies it’s for you even if a tad “over-packed”! The question remains though. Do you claim to be an espionage illuminati without having read either the “Trout Memo” or Bill Fairclough’s Beyond Enkription?

Now reviews of The Gray Man are mixed but if you liked the intermittently fast and furious pace of Bill Fairclough’s epic fact based spy novel Beyond Enkription in The Burlington Files series then you will love Anthony Russo’s The Gray Man provided that you last the relentless pace. They both make parts of Robert Ludlum’s Jason Bourne series look like slow horses! The Gray Man is about a renegade CIA agent on the run and stars Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans; it’s based on Mark Greaney’s debut novel of the same name. Fairclough’s factual stand-alone thriller Beyond Enkription is about a (real life) MI6 agent on the run from international organised crime gangs and Haiti’s TonTon Macoute from London to Nassau and Port au Prince to Miami.

The Gray Man and The Burlington Files are both musts for espionage aficionados. The difference between them is that The Burlington Files series has had mainly five star reviews, it’s full of real life characters and was written for espionage cognoscenti some of whom won’t have even heard of the ingenious spycraft tricks featured in this electrifying novel.

  84. Stumbled across this article randomly but I really appreciated the well-written and thought through analysis of the album. Although it included some speculation, it crafted an engaging, and probably realistic, version of the thought process behind the album.
Bravo! Excited to hear your next take~

  85. I too have known the joy of love and the pain of love lost. Over 50 years ago but the pain never goes away. It just doesn’t. A truly wonderful film. Timothee Chalamet and Armie Hammer are perfect. Elio being tickled by Oliver (apparently Timothee is extremely ticklish). The Peach scene, kissing in the pool, the waterfall, an emotional rollercoaster against visuals that continually delight. The end as the credits roll and Elio’s emotions are laid bare, my tears fell with his. It is a ‘performance’ that will live long in the memory. From where Timothee found this depth of emotion, we shall probably never. The film has been called a cinematic masterpiece. Maestro Guadagnino. I thank you.

  86. I was looking for a good critique of Emails I Can’t Send and I finally found it! Thank you! I can’t decide which track is my favorite. I’m between Tornado Warnings and Fast Times. I learned a lot from this analysis, but I was thinking that How Many Things may also be about her relationship with her father. Another thought. Thanks Agnius!

  87. Wasn’t sure about this series as I don’t like full on violence blood etc but it was compelling watching then I got to where I had to see if she survived every season then last two episodes I cried my eyes out lol fantastic!!!! I got my happy ever after ending. Well played by all actors and I adored Pote ❤️

  88. This is a great review! You definitely did your homework! Thanks for discussing every song and making such interesting observations. Louis is so proud of this album, has put his heart and soul into it, and it really is a masterpiece. I hope people who love music will give it a chance.

  89. For starters let me clarify now that I’m posting this for the sake of discussion and interest, and not for the sake of being hateful. Also, I understand that I’m quite late in responding to this, but I only just now found it and it got my brain going!
Now, I’m no deaf person, so take everything I say with a grain of salt, and I’m open to accepting that I may end up being quite wrong here, but I didn’t feel like this movie was suggesting that deaf people need fixing; either metaphorically or literally. I really got the vibe from the movie that the dad stressing out so much over building the daughter a better implant wasn’t to “fix” her but to help her. Even in their post apocalyptic noise-monster world, you’re simply living at a disadvantage if you can’t hear. That’s not fair by any means, but it’s true, and it’s why (as I understand it) being deaf qualifies as being disabled (?) It doesn’t mean a deaf person is incapable of functioning, it just means it’s hard for them in ways that it’s not hard for the general hearing population. This understanding I believe is relevant to the movie especially when considering this girl’s safety; not being able to hear anything approaching, not being able to hear if someone screams or something roars, and stuff like that. That’s what I believe the dad’s real motive is in always trying to build his daughter a better implant; to aid and protect her. Then the idea of the metaphor at the end of the implant being the hero and fixing all their problems by harming the monsters… I honestly just feel like that’s kind of a stretch. The monsters operate almost if not ENTIRELY on their sense of sound (so really, existing as a foil to the daughter), so I find it more than logical that there’d be a certain noise or pitch or frequency or audible texture that could be its undoing. The implant being the thing that made that frequency I think just fits contextually in this family’s story. The movie is supposed to be a metaphor, a “love letter” in John’s words, representing what it means to parents to be able to protect their children. The dad building his daughter implant after implant was one of the ways that he knew of that he could try to help and help to protect her. Then he dies. THEN his device STILL followed through and saved the day for his family! I don’t think it presents the idea of “implants fix deaf people” or “implant are saviors”, but rather that “parents are heroes” (or, ya know, parents can and should be heroes). I think this movie and this scene presents the notion of “this father really did everything he did and didn’t know how to do to protect his loved ones”, and it just was via the implant because that makes sense with the context.

Also, to address the technology flaws noted about the film, when you say an implant doesn’t give off feedback, is that meaning that it’s not possible that they ~could~ give off feedback? I still find it believable within the story, since the father is not an expert on engineering technology to aid the hearing impaired, that he could have done something wrong during construction that caused it to give off that feedback when it’s not supposed to. Is that a plausible or reasonable conclusion? Legitimate question.

On another note, I’m actually quite the opposite of deaf in that I have misophonia (a very rage-y sound processing disorder), and let me just tell you what a BLESSING it is to now have this movie out in the world. I’ve never been able to really make people understand what it’s like to suffer from misophonia or explain what a trigger sound is like. People so often conflate the experience with a pet peeve or with just generally being annoyed or irritated. Now I have this movie, and particularly this ending scene with the monster vs. the implant, to point to and say “THIS! This is what it’s like to have misophonia!!!” Anyone who’s seen the movie now knows EXACTLY what I’m trying to convey to them, and that is more meaningful to me than I can convey.

  90. I saw this at the Edinburgh Fringe, I was lucky enough to catch the one and only performance at EdFringe2022. It was a comic masterpiece, a young man with some kind of grey powder in his hair to make him look old had me in stitches immediately and within an hour he’d moved me to tears. Brilliant, a must-see and I am so looking forward to his “Peter Fleming Meets Doctor Who” show in 2023.

  91. Good evening Ellie,

This article resonated with me on a large magnitude. This is what I’m struggling with at the moment… a binge eating disorder.
It has always sounded silly to me to say “binge eating” out loud because I have always associated the word binge with alcohol.

Anyways, when you said “(…) I’d eat to the point I wouldn’t be able to sleep I felt so full, and then eat very little Monday through to Friday to make up for it.” I thought about how similar your (ex?) behaviour is to mine.

This overeating-guilt-restrict-repeat attitude/diet was maintained for about 4 months and I still managed to lose 11kg until it became untameable, clearly uncontrollable because one binge day turned to 2 days which propagated to two full weeks. Now it’s been three weeks… that’s only now that I realised it’s a disorder. It’s abnormal. This food attachment I have going on, not normal. I feel envious of people who are not as attached and obsessed with food as I… envy.

    Loved reading your article.
I hope you’re in a better space right now.
Now I’m curious to know whether you have found a solution to this conundrum…? Please let me know.

    Natasha

  92. I bought the book and enjoyed it but when put into context of what ordernany people deal with in everyday life it’s oh dear what a hard life! I say no more because less is more!

  93. I agree with every word. I’ve just watched all 19 episodes on i player. Moving and profound as well as funny it raises so many questions about religion & soviet, with no pat answers.

  94. In the movie Brendan Gleeson’s character is called Colm Doherty, but in the script he’s also referred to as “ColmSonnyLarry”. It seems like this is a shorthand for Colm, son of Larry but I’m not Irish enough to know.

  95. I love the album, but Miracle Drug is about finding a treatment for a medical illness not a lovesick song, Bad is about heroin addiction not the Troubles, the album is totally not an acoustic guitar and mic record (it’s very produced), and I don’t even know what the weird metaphor about the Lockheed war jet is about considering U2 are one of the most openly pacifist bands in history.

  96. Modern life is Rubbish is and always will be, the best album by Blur. Great memories of my teenage years listening to this

  97. It’s not supposed to be a film about ‘the trans experience’. There’s no lurid sensationalism here. It’s a film about the human experience of someone who just happens to be trans.

  98. I agree! Tony was a multi-faceted and multi-talented fellow! He was indeed a true renaissance man!

  99. I can imagine that anything close by where you live to begins to lose its glow , people who live near Stafford upon avon must feel the same about Shakespeare
    Familartie breeds contempt
I my self is completely fascinated by them and seriously need to visit Haworth, but I do understand Emily Shepard’s opinion.

  100. Be A Rebel is a simply brilliant piece of song craft and, yep, there’s a banging bass line that will fill heads and dance floors with joy. They did the right thing not trying to replace Hookie…it’s up there with True Face. It’s a brilliant lyric and a tune that has historical legs.

  101. A shame there is no mention of the work currently happening to collect, restore, and re-publish some of the Look-In strips – Robin of Sherwood last year and The Tomorrow People this year!

  102. Apologies – someone just posted this as a link on facebook Look-In page so assumed it to be a new article… just seen the date at the top of the page lol. Still if you’re reading this go pre-order The Tomorrow People collected strips!

  103. What a beautiful summary.

I agree that Rin is probably the healthiest love option out of the three and is my personal favorite.

Katherine never really felt like a viable option to be honest, always too obsessed with her career and what she wanted in life to really stop and think about what Vincent might want. I’m sure that there was once a time when they genuinely loved each other… but those days have long since passed I feel. Though I do think they would continue to be friends if they split. Sometimes being friends is better than being in a relationship.

And as much fun as Catherine might be to hang out with on the weekends I think you’d eventually die of exhaustion from trying to keep up with her party-girl antics. Best friend material for sure, but probably not the best choice for a life partner.

  104. Excellent review. I am yet to watch this program due to trepidation following the online backlash. I will dodge like the plague!

  105. Great exploration of the romantic age gap psyche! In my opinion, society needs to leave all romantic endeavours to their own devices. We live in a world of lessons, and everyone will learn theirs’ eventually.

  106. I like how honest you have been in your writing. Very well expressed👏 !! I can’t wait to read your next one

  107. This is a nuanced and insightful review, and catches Scorsese’s genius at dramatizing the dark side of human nature, which this story gives rich evidence of. Paradoxically Scorsese simultaneously manages to find elements in his characters moral failures or moments of action when they actually have a positive moment or do a positive thing, going all the way back to Taxi Driver. Burkhart loves Molly, and as Messner describes, she has the moral weight to bear the tragedies that surround her. It’s particularly good Messner catches the drawback of having a lead character like Burkhart: it weighs down the film that only Scorsese’s directorial drive and the violent nature of the story manage to keep from being too great a weight. Well done, better than all the 5* reviews suffused with Scorsese worship and righteous indignation over the treatment of the Osage.

  108. This a refreshingly different take on the film that should be out there. I think the film is doing different things simultaneously and this interpretation does not necessarily contradict the others. Obviously, what the film is doing, premeditavily on the part of its creaters or not, is different to how it is receieved and what it inspires. It is a good idea to reasses teh film now in this light. There is actually feminist groups who are carrying our elaborate campaigns of harassment to take revenge on men for allegedly cheating. They are not framing people for murder, but they are carrying our crimes, some of the abuses are violent and dehumanizing. They are explicitly inspired by the film. This has been going on for well over a decade now and different peoplw have co-opted the campaign for different reasons. Some no longer target men who have cheated, but rather frame the man for cheated in order to mobilise the group against him for other reasons- say poilitical. Thus, half the members of this Gone Girl Feminism do not even know the half of what their more radical memebers, or groups in other cities, are doing. The group chat administrators control the flow of information on the group chat, and dictate what is to be done in the scripted harassment. It is hard to tell if art is mimicing life, or life mimicing art. If you are interested, you should read this: https://interpocula.substack.com/p/gone-girl-feminism-film-inspires-violent-group

  109. this poem still sends shivers down my spine. it’s so well written and well thought and conveys the emotions of regret so clearly, and has a strong impact about suicide prevention. my favourite poem.

  110. Won’t be watching Freeform anymore after cancelling Good Trouble. There was nothing better that they played so they messed up. See ya.Not

  111. Hi Emma,

This is a great article and what i was looking for after reading about feminism at the same time as watching desperate housewives. I think another subheading that is a strong one is work. Bree is so traditional that the work she pursues is a domestic one (cooking/catering) found from a hobby. Susan writes children’s book and works in a nursery with infants. Gaby relies on the breadwinner Carlos as a representation the men that “should” be the top dogs and work in non-domestic roles like the business sector. When she does do some work, she teaches little girls how to pageant (to look pretty and be a model for people). Their gardeners are male, their housekeepers and childminders will be women… Handymen are male, Roy needed something to do and even had the audacity to be uncomfortable that Lynette could make the decisions rather than Tom, which I think was more about believing Tom should be making all the decisions rather than having a more equal say for the both of them.

Lynette is most interesting from a work standpoint, breaking into the business sector, even though it seems the top top person above her has always been male… But like you say, her breasts have been monetized in the series. Also whenever Lynette had a female colleague in a senior role, they always had a terrible relationship like women relationships in this workplace can’t thrive.

Also, I remember when Susan’s highschool acquaintance in the police explains how she has a career yet her life is terrible anyway. She was also made to look undesirable and as if her aspirations in the police force has meant she had to sacrifice being happy altogether and women shouldn’t step out of line by going into those lines of work.

There’s so much more I could find but lets just say I have just started the intro of s6 ep 12 after ep 11 and the start of ep 12 being so traditional (boys will be boys and girls will be girls), I’m not sure I will be going back this time

  112. We will happily dock elsewhere— anywhere, really! Personally, I would subscribe to any streaming service just for Our Flag Means Death. It’s so important to me! And I want other media companies to know that the “representation” we want is more than ticking boxes. Our Flag Means Death has set a wonderful precedent of showing characters from marginalized groups such as racial minorities, people with disabilities, people with mental illnesses or disorders, the gender-diverse, or people who are *not straight* living fulfilling lives, full of joy, pain, and growth. That’s what we want. Please #saveofmd #renewasacrew

  113. OMG, I am SO EXCITED for the new season of Outer Banks! The trailer looks like it’s going to be filled with even more drama, adventure, and romance. I can’t wait to see what happens next with the Pogues and the wealthy elite. Bring on the summer and the new episodes! 😍🏖️

  114. Jess Parker’s insightful review of the Doctor Who 60th anniversary specials takes us on a thrilling journey through time and space. The return of Russell T. Davies and David Tennant as the fourteenth incarnation of the Doctor adds a nostalgic touch. ‘The Star Beast’ kicks off the trio with a bold revamp, though not without its challenges. ‘Wild Blue Yonder’ delivers a breath of fresh air, exploring the Doctor’s vulnerability and embracing the eerie encounters reminiscent of classic episodes. The show-stopping finale, ‘The Giggle,’ starring Neil Patrick Harris as the Toymaker, brings camp, terror, and grandiosity.

The article masterfully navigates the climactic scenes of ‘The Giggle,’ revealing the genius introduction of bi-generation and the ease with which Ncuti Gatwa takes the reins. For those who may have missed the ending, the surprises are best experienced firsthand.

As we delve into the Doctor’s new era, the anticipation is high, especially with the return of the Christmas Special and the promising episode ‘The Church on Ruby Road.’ For Doctor Who fans and newcomers alike, this review is a must-read. If you’re curious about the iconic 14th Doctor’s coat, you can find it here.

  115. I really enjoyed this article! I have spent the last year living in Japan (I’m from Ireland), and I still catch myself viewing certain cultural differences as ‘bad’, and make an effort to appreciate that they are what makes a culture unique. Thank you for sharing your perspective!

  116. The game had fairly poor reviews at the time and AOE engine didn’t really work for SW – especially with the fighters and air units that moved like ground units just in the air.

It wouldn’t call it underrated. It was okay at the time, but AOE was much, much better.

  117. Utterly brilliant. Movie gave me goosebumps. The article brought it all back. What was also poignant in the movie was Rita Marley’s struggles both as a wife / mother / artist and warrior for Bob.

  118. I just watched this movie for the first time in March, 2024, on Amazon Prime. It had me spell bound. Not knowing about its background, I thought Meg was fabulous and looked fabulous. I’m familiar with her rom-coms but thought this movie may have been produced before them. I’m appalled when I read the reviews. The quality of this movie far surpasses so much of what’s considered entertaining in 2024. Meg was a terrific actress. Kudos to her for being willing to off her clothes and engage so erotically with the male lead. Wish there were more movies like this being made today. And s_rew those that reviewed and regarded this movie with such a double standard.

  119. This is incredible! I really feel like I was there. Really well written, looking forward to hearing more from you Kai!

  120. Oh my god how you write has me so gripped into watching these. Never going to have enough hours in a day or could it be a year x

  121. Parts of this book are very good (the descriptions of family grief, for example) but the passages describing “heaven” are mawkish and, quire frankly, dreadful: the kind of stuff a literate 8-year-old might write but which anyone over the age of 10 would regard simply as tripe.

    Don’t bother with it!

  122. I feel as if I was there… amazing review.
Such a talent in writing Dave.
Looking forward to reading your next article.

  123. Inspiring commentary on a book I read as a teenager in high school. It was after I had read and felt recognized, spiritually and intellectually by all of Hesses’ other books. Now in my 80s and still thirsting for the clear reveal of my existence, or even move closer to majister, I’m going to dip back into ‘The Glass Bead Game’.Thank you.

  124. I saw Vincent – and indeed the thrust of the story – as a metaphor for New York at the time. His narrative arc reflected the transformation of the city.

Cumberbatch is immense in the role. A broken man, the victim of an unloved childhood, trying to create joy for other children and his lonely child within while all the time visiting his horrors in turn on his own child.

It’s a story of love and redemption. Of community. And how that community can be corrupted with evil consequences.

It’s a masterpiece by Abi Morgan. Her best work yet. So many layers. So beautifully paced. The actors and crew delivered for her. Bravo!

  125. Point of information… Rocky Horror, Little Shop, and Hedwig all started on the stage and went to the screen not the other way around!

  126. I appreciate what this article is trying to say about Bucky, but The Falcon and the Winter Soldier really didn’t do justice to Bucky, and I can’t believe I said that ’cause it’s my favourite show, but it’s true; I don’t blame Sam at all or even Bucky’s former so-called therapist, I mean, Bucky isn’t exactly forthcoming with information on what happened to him while imprisoned by Hydra, so I know a lot of people aren’t really gonna understand the fact Bucky actually had no control over his actions, but the fact that it was shown like Bucky making amends would suddenly “cure” him as though that’s all that mattered and not the way Bucky was treated, what he personally had to deal with so much it literally changed his brain and his soul; I’m hoping that’s addressed to a degree at least in Thunderbolts*; Bucky deserves to mourn that time he lost where it isn’t rushed or twisted in a way that makes him seem somehow responsible, so ‘though for Bucky’s part clearly it did him good to correct injustices carried out by the Winter Soldier, Bucky deserves to do himself good too by not only saying that he “didn’t have a choice”, but really understanding what that means and, dare I say, owning it.

As to the whole war thing: Steve only went back in time to be with Peggy; it had nothing to do with not being able to “move forward from the war”, and Bucky must still have consideration about that in a somewhat positive like light anyway considering he still wears his dog tags.

  127. It’s a shame to see Netflix’s ‘Resident Evil’ series get the axe after just one season. It had so much potential with its unique take on the franchise, and the characters were starting to develop nicely. I was really looking forward to seeing where they would take the story. Hopefully, they revisit this universe in the future with a stronger concept!

  128. What about This is me trying / Labyrinth at Gelsenkirchen Night 2, when she ended with “I just wanted you to know I’m falling in love again” and Travis Kelce was there?

  129. How do you spend 21 hours in that character creator? It is one of the most limiting and sparse ones I’ve ever used. This is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever read.

  130. I wish to add that America and Canada has many statues and relief sculptures dedicated to Burns. PM William Lyon Mackenzie of Canada, a proud Scot, made a pilgrimage to Burns home in the late 1920s when he visited the UK for a Commonwealth meeting. Mackenzie made his name in 1919 after writing a pro-union study “The Industry and Humanity” to complete a Harvard PhD in industrial relations. Elected in 1920 as PM, he defended the existence of practical bread-and-butter unions. Reactionary corporate power, represented by millionaire Tories, defeated him in 1928. Re-elected in 1933, he brought in the 8 hour day legislation for federally regulated sectors. In 1948, he reformed federal labor law before he re-signed. One of his great achievements was, as labor minister in the PM Wilfred Laurier ‘s gov’t, to develop legislation in 1907 for arbitration between employers and workers on strike. WLMK was a democrat who enjoyed mixing with the British political elite – mostly aristocrats – at the same time that he felt that he was following the social justice spirit of Burns. I appreciate the insight that G. Rutherford has provided. Burns was hugely admired by Scots in Canada and America. Google “Robert Burns statues,” and you will see the proof. Burns work has a new relevance in this era of a greater inequality in the distribution of wealth in Western societies.

  131. I can’t believe anybody could possibly approve this show..

Simulated child sex destroys everything …

This could have been a great show, but the current trend to show sex as often as possible completely destroyed it.

An important thread to the show was the prostitution and then murder of a 14-year-old boy.. this happens in the real world and definitely was a crucial part of the show.

But instead of simply talking about it and even visually implying that something happened, they literally act out a 14-year-old giving oral sex to an adult.

This is sick on so many levels… It’s bound to turn on some of the sick people who have this problem… It certainly isn’t appropriate if any children happen to watch the show because it features a big sesame Street kind of monster.. but most important of all, we don’t need simulation of child pornography, ever..

From the tone of the show, I imagine they think they did a good thing. They act out many other problems in this world that need to be fixed.. but this is beyond a bad judgment call.. this scene should be removed.

  132. Review reads like someone who’s out to hate the film from the start, blasts the film for explaining too much, then later complains not enough is explained clearly…

Not going to win an Oscar but still a fun watch.

  133. Underwhelming review from a man who cannot move an inch past the “sex worker” persona. Holly Golightly is a complex human persona struggling to find a balance between survival, self realization, and true love. Her less than stellar connections are truly the side stories which build up the reasons behind her life circumstances, but absolutely do not identify her. Why are we not talking about Paul Varjak being a male prostitute?

  134. More often than not people, especially in airports, don’t give two shits about anything going on around them. It’d be completely plausible that they wouldn’t pay attention to someone talking to themselves

  135. Completely agree with the above. I think it Started off really well and then became boring to the extent that whilst I made it to the end, the next day I wondered why I had bothered. Really disappointing.

  136. The most implausible implausibilities were at the end in the plane. How did the traveler get on a plane with a pistol? How did he get into the cargo area unchallenged?

  137. Slow and riveting, if your looking for Star Wars this ain’t it. Played like a French film (slow) with the fingerprints of American Gothic. I found it spell binding and interesting on a human level. Given what’s coming out of Hollywood at the moment, much to admire. A film for adults that have grown up on Americana. A gem, with a plot line.

  138. An apt review that takes you to the movie and words describing the manner in which the movie has shaped up. Your write up not only captures the true essence of the script but also balances well every department.

Well done 👏 and great reading. 👍

  139. What a fantastic list! I love how you included a mix of classics and modern films. The cinematography in each of these really captures the beauty of storytelling. It’s always inspiring to revisit these stunning visuals and see how they resonate with different themes. Great job, Lucy!

  140. A wonderful story! I read it in 2 nights. I have read all her other books and the standard never wanes. So looking forward to the next one.

  141. OMG my daughter is the one that made him the t shirt and gave it to him at the show in Cincinnati, Ohio. My daughter started listening to music by CG5 last year on YouTube . We started looking up information on him and found out that he was diagnosed with Autism. My daughter has Autism and ADHD. When CG5 came out with his song OCD and we kept listening to his songs and watching all his socials, it showed her that someone who she looked up to also had the same condition and he was successful . We first saw his show in Cleveland, Ohio. It was her first concert and we got to meet CG5 at the meet and greet. He is so talented , but also so patient and sweet to his fans . She made the piece of art of him for a project in her art class at school . I was worried it would get damaged and took a picture of the art . We knew he wore a red suit at the concert we saw him in , so we had it printed on a red shirt . We printed her one too. He came out after the show. Let us take some pictures and signed her shirt. Because of her Autism she has a hard time making friends. For him to come out in the shirt and to sign hers and take a picture with her really meant a lot to her and to us her parents as well. We will always be fans of CG5 and support his music and movies. Because he has true talent

  142. Fantastic interview great questions understand bit more about the band and what they are doing and believe in really loved this interview looking forward to the tour

  143. Ah a very good interview, good questions asked and she replied very well to them
Sounds like they had a good rapport with each other
    Well done to both

  144. Mussolini: Son of the century.
A fantastically, well acted precise history drama.
This is one of the best TV series ever created, it’s way up there in the top 5 ever made.
The actors have given there all in this period drama and the sets look absolutely great.
The background music all so brings it alive.
A warning from the past of what could happen in the present. Do not be bullied or allow being outnumbered to silence you and to make you exist in fear.
We can never allow fascism to rise its ugly head ever again.

  145. Loved this list! It’s great to see such a variety of indie films highlighted for streaming this October. Can’t wait to check them out—especially excited for the ones I’ve never heard of before. Thanks for the recommendations!

  146. I love how you captured the balance of humor and emotion in ‘The Pebble and the Boy.’ It sounds like a refreshing take on the road trip genre! Can’t wait to check it out!

  147. I’m so excited to hear that the original cast is returning for the ‘Scott Pilgrim vs. the World’ animated series! It’ll be amazing to see them bring these beloved characters back to life in a new format. Can’t wait to see how they adapt the story!

  148. You forgot to mention Peace & Noise, & more recently, Peyote Dance. Also the books:Babel, M Train, The Complete Lyrics & the Coral Sea

  149. This is a fascinating development! It’s interesting to see how major corporations like Tencent are willing to challenge government decisions, especially when it comes to national security implications. I’m curious to see how this legal battle unfolds and what it could mean for international relations and tech companies moving forward.

  150. Totally agree, love this. Captures the essence of the rich and poor and their interactions with the unexpected characters’ relationships surprising us the most.

  151. I absolutely loved Carol Ann Duffy’s poem this week! The way she intertwines emotion and imagery is breathtaking. Each line feels like a journey, and the themes resonate deeply. Thank you for sharing such a powerful piece!

  152. I’m really disappointed to hear about the cancellation of Netflix’s ‘Resident Evil’ series. I thought it had a unique take on the franchise with some intriguing character development. It’s frustrating when shows don’t get a chance to grow and explore their potential. I really hope we see more adaptations that respect the source material in the future!

  153. I’m so excited for Season Three of ‘Outer Banks’! The trailer looks amazing and I’m already hooked on what’s to come for our favorite characters. Can’t wait to see how the story unfolds!

  154. I’m really disappointed to hear that Netflix’s ‘Resident Evil’ series has been canceled after just one season. I thought it had some intriguing elements and a unique take on the franchise. It feels like there’s so much potential left untapped! I hope Netflix considers reviving it or at least exploring other adaptations down the line.

  155. It’s interesting to see Tencent taking such a strong stance against the Pentagon’s military company listing. This legal battle could have significant implications for U.S.-China relations and the tech industry’s landscape. I wonder how this will affect other companies caught in similar situations. Looking forward to seeing how this unfolds!

  156. This post perfectly captures the essence of why ‘Clone Wars’ is such a standout series! The character development and storytelling are incredibly engaging, making it a must-watch for any Star Wars fan. I love how it dives deeper into the lore and showcases the complexities of the Jedi and the Clone Wars themselves. Great article!

  157. I can’t believe the new trailer for Season Three of ‘Outer Banks’ is finally here! It looks so intense, and I can’t wait to see what new adventures the Pogues will face. The chemistry between the characters is always a highlight, and I’m hoping for some epic twists this season. Bring on the releases!

  158. I absolutely loved Carol Ann Duffy’s poem! Her use of language is so powerful and evocative. The imagery really drew me in, and it resonates with a lot of the emotions we all experience. Thank you for sharing this piece; it’s a wonderful reminder of the beauty in poetry!

  159. THIS IS BRILLIANT!!! Covers all the core reasons why I pick up the fantasy books. We need that magic in our mundane lives✨✨

  160. This post perfectly captures why ‘Star Wars: Clone Wars’ is a must-watch! The animation style is so unique, and the storytelling really deepens our understanding of the characters. I love how it fills in the gaps between the prequels. Thanks for highlighting its significance!

  161. A hauntingly beautiful exploration of loneliness, pride, and the quiet despair that can settle into isolated lives. The performances are quietly powerful—Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson bring heartbreaking depth to a friendship’s strange unraveling. Martin McDonagh’s writing balances dark humor with tragic poignancy in a way that lingers long after the credits roll.

  162. Thank you both. Yes I’d probably avoid Rome for the next couple of weeks but then should be glorious again! And I agree, the crypt is one of the spookiest places I’ve ever been – I emerged with all kinds of questions as to who thought that was a good idea!

  164. But hardly a mention of the innumerable and varied cafés, restaurants, the pervasive steep hills, the enchanting locals….

  165. Well done for writing such a perceptive and thought- provoking article. I hope it reaches a wide audience and makes voters in any future local and national elections think hard about the lack of clarity and accountability in many of the pledges put forward.

  166. I like H.Hesse, but, ln my personal opinion, and specially in this book, is to much, reslly to much anecdotas, and as result making the book tedious to read. (My personal opinion)
I would say, that Hesse, in this aspect, is something like the anti-thesis of S. Zweig.

  168. I’m really disappointed to see Netflix’s ‘Resident Evil’ get canceled. I thought they brought a fresh perspective to the franchise, and the characters had so much potential. It’s a shame we won’t get to see where the story could have gone. What a missed opportunity!

  169. Great post! I completely agree that ‘Clone Wars’ offers a depth to the Star Wars universe that many fans may overlook. The character development, especially with Anakin and Ahsoka, is fantastic, and the animation style is unique. It’s definitely worth a watch for any Star Wars enthusiast!

  170. This sounds a very interesting play about things that are close to everyone’s heart
I like ready articles by Cory he makes it an interesting read well done

  171. I think Tencent’s response to the Pentagon’s listing is a bit extreme. It’s crucial for companies to address these kinds of issues directly, but a legal battle could escalate tensions further. What are your thoughts?

  172. Fantastic review went to see this and this review is spot on agree with what he has said

  173. Very good and a real view of this play songs were great wish they touched on the subject little more

  174. A beautifully expressed piece that is very thought provoking. An important topic treated with great depth and understanding.

  175. It’s a real shame to see Netflix’s ‘Resident Evil’ series get cancelled after just one season. I was genuinely excited about the direction they were taking, and it had some interesting elements that could have been further explored. Hopefully, they’ll consider bringing it back or giving us something new within the franchise!

  176. Best film I have ever experienced in my whole life I would recommend it to viewers who haven’t seen it yet👍👍

  177. I personally haven’t read the book and it’s important to have opinions which is why I’m leaving one of my own…I feel like this film just related on a bigger picture idealism that a teenage girl goes through the transformation of finding her own path in life not relatable to most but it does have aspects that I think everyone can understand and agree upon so my personal rating would be a 7/10 for ‘How To Build a Girl’ not to mention the performances were very well executed.

  178. Great list! I’m especially excited to check out the indie gems you highlighted. October always feels like the perfect time for cozy movie nights. Thank you for the recommendations!

  179. I loved this week’s poem by Carol Ann Duffy! Her use of language is so powerful and evocative. The themes she explores resonate deeply, and the imagery she creates is striking. Thank you for sharing this piece!

  180. Great list! I’m especially excited to check out those indie gems that I haven’t heard of yet. October is the perfect month for cozying up with some fresh films. Thanks for the recommendations!

  181. I loved your review of “The Pebble and the Boy”! It sounds like a perfect blend of humor and heartfelt moments. The idea of a road trip movie with such a unique premise really intrigues me. I can’t wait to check it out and see how the characters unfold on their journey!

  182. Great list! I’m particularly excited about the indie films you highlighted. It’s always refreshing to see smaller projects get some love. Can’t wait to check them out this month!

  183. I wasn’t even aware of this show until now. Thank you for the coverage and raw truth here, Qourry.

  184. Loving the concept of engaging with your local area as a tourist. I shall go into the woods and thoroughly observe.

  185. What a wonderful piece, and beautiful photos.
I love the idea of seeing something familiar with ‘new’ eyes/perspective. This is something my husband and I try to do, and it has a way of opening ones eyes, heart, mind….and, if we let it, slows down time, much needed in today’s world.

  186. It’s disappointing to see Netflix’s ‘Resident Evil’ series getting cancelled after just one season. There was so much potential for character development and world-building, and I was hoping to see where the story would lead. I guess fans of the franchise will have to look forward to other adaptations.

  187. Fine but what not make a film about the horrors of puppy farming in the UK including N Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. The rescue scene is not all it should be either another topic that needs to be focused on.

  188. From where I was sitting this show is utterly brilliant . I was I at the same show as you Looocy ?

  189. She has a wonderful voice but, it’s sad that she feels the way she does about the greatest President, (Donald J. Trump), that these United States of America has ever had!!! Wake up to reality Patti! Be Awake not Woke!!! Even someone like yourself could still learn a thing or two! It’s not too late for that!!!

  190. It’s such a disappointment to see Netflix’s ‘Resident Evil’ get canceled after just one season. There was so much potential in the story and characters, and I really thought it would find its footing. The mix of horror and action had me excited for more. What a missed opportunity!

  191. Great recommendations! I’m especially excited to check out the indie gems you mentioned. Thanks for highlighting these films; I appreciate the insight into what’s available for streaming this month!

  192. Great recommendations! I’m particularly excited to check out the indie films mentioned. It’s always refreshing to discover hidden gems! Thanks for sharing this list!

  193. I loved how you captured the essence of “The Pebble and the Boy”! It’s refreshing to see a road trip movie that balances humor with heartfelt moments. The chemistry between the characters really brought the story to life. Can’t wait to see it!

  194. A petulant, tendentious review. The writer obviously saw a different film than the one I savored in 1984. The film is about Salieri and his view of Mozart, not a Mozart biopic. And the brilliant playwright who created “Amadeus” drew from other historical and dramatized depictions, including Pushkin’s 1830s drama, “Mozart and Salieri.” And has the reviewer ever read Mozart’s letters? One must wonder. Furthermore, the brilliantly produced soundtrack played by Neville Marriner and the Academy of St. Martin’s In The Fields rebukes the reviewer’s condescending assertion about the film’s music. Overall, this is a poorly considered review of a great film. As composer Max Reger once wrote to a critic who’d written a simillar review of his music, “I am in the smallest room of my home. I have your review in front of me. It will soon be behind me!”

  195. I’m so excited for Season Three of ‘Outer Banks’! The trailer looks amazing, and I can’t wait to see what happens next with the Pogues. The suspense and adventures just keep getting better!

  196. Loveday asks: As long as we’re entertained, do we really care if memoirs are accurate?
Answer: Yes we do. Otherwise, call it fiction.

  197. Great selection of films for October! I’m particularly excited about the indie gems you mentioned. I always appreciate discovering films that might not be on everyone’s radar. Keep up the fantastic recommendations!

  198. I thought the film was nonsense. Why didn’t they just relocate, since they were prepared to travel, and just get jobs? Raynor was 51 and still a long way off from retirement. Why would they expose Moth’s health further by undertaking at 630 mile walk and camping rough? The whole ‘drama’ seems contrived. There was a lot of tutting and guffawing in the cinema when I saw it.

  199. Brilliant interview as always from cory love his question and the answers he gets very real interviews

  200. Really good insight . The interview pressed against society changes and acceptance. Enjoyable read !

  201. Great list of films! I’m especially excited to see how “The Banshees of Inisherin” captures that unique blend of humor and heartbreak. Thanks for the recommendations!

  202. I’m disappointed with this review—it really doesn’t give Amadeus the credit it deserves. First, there’s no acknowledgment that this is a 40-year-old film, which naturally reflects some of the storytelling conventions of its time. It’s also crucial to point out that Amadeus is not an original screenplay but an adaptation of Peter Shaffer’s stage play: it’s not meant to be a historically accurate Mozart biopic, but rather a fictionalized, dramatic interpretation that blends truth with artistic invention.

What’s especially baffling is the lack of recognition for the extraordinary performances by F. Murray Abraham and Tom Hulce, as that doesn’t even count when reviewing a movie.

I do agree with the critique about some of the English-sung segments, which feel like an odd choice that I never understood. But to say there’s not enough of Mozart’s music in the film? That’s seriously off the mark. Amadeus isn’t a musical, in case you haven’t noticed, but it is saturated with Mozart’s compositions—used with such dramatic precision that they almost become a character of their own.

For anyone else reading this: watch Amadeus. It’s a magnificent and entertaining film. And if it inspires viewers to explore the truth behind the myth, then it has more than done its job—even with a few flaws.

  203. Great list! I’m especially excited about the indie films you highlighted. I’ve been looking for some fresh picks to watch this month. Thanks for the recommendations!

  204. What a fantastic list! I’m so glad to see films like “Blade Runner” and “The Tree of Life” recognized for their breathtaking visuals. They truly are masterpieces. I would love to hear more about your thoughts on how cinematography can impact storytelling in cinema!

  205. I never realized how much depth the 2003 ‘Clone Wars’ series adds to the Star Wars universe! The animation style is so unique, and the character development really shines. Your post made me want to revisit the series and appreciate all the little details I might have missed the first time around. Thanks for the recommendation!

  206. I’m so excited for Season Three of ‘Outer Banks’! The trailer looks incredible, and I can’t wait to see what adventures the Pogues get into next. The cliffhangers from last season have me on the edge of my seat!

  207. I startedwatching sound of music at the age of 20yrs ,and now I am 76yrs and will not get tired of it.I am very optimistic that I would continue to watch sound of music till end of life.

  208. It is a thought-provoking article. It’s right to show the hypocrisy of Reform and highlight that election material is basically slogans designed to garner support from voters whose thinking already leans towards that viewpoint.

The same could be said for any party. The Greens, Conservatives, Liberal Democrats and of course Labour are all at it. Telling voters via their dubious election material what they want to hear.

The article mentions grifters. Let’s not forget the freebies that senior politicians take and it’s easy to name countless examples, but we’ll go with Boris Johnson (free tickets to Taylor Swift concert), Sir Kier Starmer (countless football matches). Grifters, both of them and both have had over £100k of freebies in the last few years. Tell me they are not in it for themselves.

Here’s a stab at an alternative last couple of paragraphs:

When populist rhetoric distracts from material issues, the concerns of voters will fail to be addressed. Non-doms not paying tax on their worldwide income but paying substantially more UK tax than most people ever will and people subsidising state education by not using it but having to pay VAT on private school fees are not the root cause of the cost of living crisis, and are merely being used as scapegoats for the failure of a party that has promised what their back benchers have prevented from being delivered. Labour stokes the Class War to gain support, but their vindictive policies will inevitably fail to address the most important needs of the electorate.

What more can you expect from a political party full of career politicians and shameless grifters that was originally and still are in the pockets of unions?

  209. Hold the line at the Edinburgh fringe absolutely brilliant 🤩 superb acting original, funny and moving – you’ll laugh and you’ll cry -go see

  210. The question for me is around adulthood.

One is currently considered an adult at 18.

Drivers can’t start driving cars until they are 17. Why not 16?

The age to buy cigarettes and smoke has been increased to 18, why move it from 16 where it was a few years ago?

Children are required to stay in education or training until they are 18, this has increased recently from 16. The amount they can earn in the workplace and thus pay into the system that Prime Minister Kier Starmer refers to is so seriously restricted that it almost negates his point.

Children may only get married under the age of 18 with parental permission. Why not 16 without parental permission?

Children can only have beer, cider or wine at 16 and 17 in a pub with food and with adult supervision. To drink alcohol, they must be 18. Why shouldn’t they be allowed to drink alcohol without food in a pub at 16?

The governments of the previous few years have been shifting the age where children are allowed to do things to when they are adults. If the government is going to lower the voting age to 16, then it’s time to reset the age of adulthood to 16 and allow everyone at that age to do all the things above that the government currently prevents them from doing.

Voting is currently set at 18. It’s right that people are questioning the motives behind lowering the voting age when the direction of travel in recent years has been to treat children as children for longer than ever.

  211. While some critics argue that All Quiet on the Western Front (2022) is held back by a flimsy screenplay, this view overlooks the film’s most powerful elements: the performances and the music. The actors deliver astonishingly authentic portrayals, bringing depth, vulnerability, and humanity to every character—far beyond what the page might suggest. Even in scenes with minimal dialogue, the cast communicates profound emotion through subtle gestures and expressions, proving that character depth comes alive on screen, not just on paper.

Complementing these performances is a masterful score that moves the audience in ways the screenplay alone cannot. The music heightens tension, sorrow, and fleeting moments of hope, creating an immersive emotional landscape that pulls viewers directly into the soldiers’ experience.

In short, while the screenplay may appear restrained, the combined force of extraordinary acting and evocative music transforms the film into a gripping, unforgettable exploration of war’s human cost.

  212. We absolutely loved the show- every aspect of it- and would have loved the time to return and see the other sister perform. I shall frame the beautiful tote bag as a reminder of my 15th consecutive visit to the Fringe.

  213. Thank you so much for your wonderful review, it genuinely means the world to our cast and crew. I’m now all the more excited to come back and direct another show!
    Best wishes.

  214. I’m so excited for Season Three of ‘Outer Banks’! The trailer looks incredible, and I can’t wait to see how the story unfolds. The characters have really grown on me, and I love the mix of adventure and drama. Bring on the new episodes!

  215. This review perfectly captures the essence of “The Pebble and the Boy”! I love how it balances humor and heartfelt moments. The road trip concept is such a classic, but it sounds like this film brings a unique twist. Can’t wait to watch it!

  216. Excellent article Ross, well done. A very enjoyable read and I look forward to the next instalment with so many options in Northumberland!

  217. In a world of “Amityville Shark House” and “Cruel Jaws” (AKA Jaws 5 Bruno Mattei’s unauthorized film in Italy) there’s no way a big budget production like The Meg is “The worst”. Silly folks!

  218. This post perfectly captures why ‘Clone Wars’ is a must-watch! The unique animation style and deep character development really set it apart from other series. I’ve always found that it adds so much depth to the Star Wars lore. Can’t wait to rewatch it!

  219. I’m so excited for Season Three of ‘Outer Banks’! The trailer looks intense, and I can’t wait to see how the story unfolds. The character development has been amazing, and I love the way they blend adventure with drama. Bring on the new season!

  220. I’m suppose to read this for a book club I’m joining as a librarian at another library. I haven’t even made it to 2 chapters! Soooo bored. So disappointed as Adrian Mole is my most favourite fiction series of all time so I’m so disappointed about this and really wanted to like it. I think Sue Townsend just wanted to be ‘clever’ and do something a bit different, off the wall using a very simple plot. A bit too simple if you ask me. Nothing of interest here I’m afraid.

  221. Hi Ellen
This is a wonderful review , I’m glad that you and so many others were able to catch and enjoy Dean’s show !
We are all so very proud of him back here at home as he continues his never ending musical journey !
All the very best wishes and many thanks to you !
    Wayne Misdale – (Dean’s Dad)

  222. It’s such a disappointment to see Netflix’s ‘Resident Evil’ get canceled after just one season. The potential for exploring the franchise in a new light was huge, and I felt they were just starting to delve into some interesting storylines. I really hope they reconsider or at least explore what works in future adaptations.

  223. What a fantastic article Melissa! I love all the tips about how to get around and the best places to eat and drink (all the cakes sounded amazing!). You’ve done a perfect job of capturing the city and your photographs are beautiful as well! It wouldn’t have been on my radar to visit Bratislava before but after reading your article it’s definitely on the list! Great job 🙂

  224. I can’t wait for Season 3 of Outer Banks! The trailer looks so intense and full of adventure. I’m really excited to see how the story unfolds, and the chemistry between the characters is just incredible. Bring on the treasure hunting and drama!

  225. What an incredible list! I love how you’ve highlighted the visual storytelling in these films. It’s fascinating to see such a diverse range of styles and genres coming together. I can’t wait to revisit some of my favorites and explore a few new ones!

  226. I’m so excited for Season Three of ‘Outer Banks’! The trailer gives such an adrenaline rush and I can’t wait to see what adventures await the Pogues this time. The chemistry between the characters is what keeps me hooked!

  227. I’m really disappointed to hear that Netflix’s ‘Resident Evil’ series was cancelled after just one season. I was hoping for more depth and character development, especially given the franchise’s rich history. It felt like they were just starting to explore some interesting themes. Hopefully, this won’t be the end of adaptations for such an iconic series!

  228. Excellent review. Encapsulating the central dynamic of the song in those two words: heritage and identity. Balancing these can baffle people:me. The leaf is free but only thanks to the tree whose roots it never sees.

  229. This review offers a balanced perspective on Season 2, highlighting both the emotional depth in exploring grief and the frustrating pacing issues with certain plotlines. The analysis of character development and missed opportunities feels insightful.Mercury Coder

  230. I liked your review. The two VHS tapes the eldest daughter “Bruce” watched were Rocky and Jaws. If you listen to her acting out with her siblings in the pool, she quotes Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) about the shark’s bite radius. Yet we are positive because of her dancing at her parents’ anniversary she saw Flash Dance. I thought about this way too much. I finally figured she viewed a Flashdance preview or trailer on one of the VHS tapes. She never quoted Flashdance. And most every trailer preview of Flashdance contained those dance scenes. “Bruce” was the nickname of the mechanical shark in Jaws.

  231. I loved this week’s poem by Carol Ann Duffy! The imagery and emotions are so powerful. Her ability to capture complex feelings in simple words is truly inspiring. Thanks for sharing this beautiful piece!

  232. I’ve always viewed the BBC as broadly somewhere in the middle with a very difficult task. Those on the Left believe it to have right-wing bias, and those on the Right believe it to have left-wing bias. The fact it can upset everyone tends to mean it is probably correct most of the time.

However, the Panorama broadcast in question was a disgrace and has left a very sour taste in my mouth. I don’t consider it a mistake but consider it as an editorial who thinks Trump is a ghastly individual knitting together content to show that. Incidentally, I do agree that Trump is a dreadful person who isn’t fit for the office of POTUS and the BBC didn’t need to edit that speech to show that. This piece makes excuses for that.

The real problem for me is that the number of news outlets now that can be believed is becoming so rare that I now hold an enormous dose of scepticism to pretty much everything I read from the mainstream media and I don’t believe a word I read from anyone that isn’t mainstream. Even this piece ignores the blatant bias of the left-wing media by focussing on the obvious bias of the right-wing media. Does that bring into question the indiependance of the author? Yes it does in my opinion.

I trust only Reuters now for news, whereas I used to hold the BBC in high regard. It has slipped in recent years with some of the lines of questioning on the Today Programme (Radio 4) being frankly ridiculous by trying to trick interviewees into saying things that the presenter knows they are never going to say. It makes some of the interviews on the Today Programme unlistenable.

  233. No one ever mentions Doc’s threat that if Holly doesn’t return with him he’ll tell Fred he isn’t welcome with him & will tell him to re’enlist.. any sympathy I had for him ended when we saw that scene.

  234. I can’t wait for Season Three of ‘Outer Banks’! The trailer looks intense and full of surprises. It seems like the stakes are higher than ever. The character development has been amazing, and I’m excited to see where the story takes us next. Bring on the adventure!

  235. I loved your review of “The Pebble and the Boy”! The blend of humor and heart really makes it stand out among road trip movies. I appreciate how you highlighted the character dynamics and the beautiful scenery—definitely added to my excitement to watch it!
