ININ Games has announced that an Enhanced Edition of the 2019 action-adventure title Shenmue III will be released for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch platforms.
Shenmue III is the third entry in the long-running classic open-world series, and the first entry in 18 years (not including the short-lived 2010 mobile spin-off Shenmue City). While the first two entries were developed and published by SEGA, series creator Yu Suzuki left the company in 2011 to focus on his own studio Ys Net, announcing a crowdfunding campaign for Shenmue III four years later.
After raising over $7m and being delayed several times, Shenmue III finally released in November 2019 to mixed reviews, with outlets like IGN criticising how outdated the game felt compared to modern titles. Sales of the game were considered acceptable for a “niche title”, though Suzuki did mention that the game was intended “for the fans” and that a potential fourth title would be made to appeal to a wider audience.
The Enhanced version of Shenmue III was announced by ININ Games on their website, with a statement announcing features like “overhauled visuals, performance boosts, and quality-of-life updates”. The game will also feature a “Classic Camera” mode akin to the original two games on the Dreamcast, and gameplay tweaks that will make the game easier for new players. The post also mentioned that any changes are toggleable to “preserve the original experience” of the game.
No release date for Shenmue III Enhanced has been announced yet. The game is set to launch on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, as well as on PlayStation 5 consoles. The game will also launch on Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch consoles (It is currently unknown which Switch consoles the game will appear on), after appearing only on PC and PlayStation 4 upon initial release.
