Apple TV+ has officially cancelled The Last Frontier, led by Jason Clarke, after just one season.

The 10-episode thriller premiered on the platform just two months ago, and multiple reports point to a mixed critical and fan response as the primary reason behind its cancellation.

The series stars Clarke as Frank Remnic, the lone US marshal overseeing the remote barrens of Alaska. His fragile grip on order unravels when a prison transport crashes, releasing a group of dangerous inmates into the wilderness. The cast also includes Haley Bennett, Simone Kessell, Dallas Goldtooth, Dominic Cooper, Tait Blum, and Alfre Woodard.

Created by Jon Bokenkamp and Richard D’Ovidio, the show was executive produced by the pair alongside director Sam Hargrave, Laura Benson, Glenn Kessler, Albert Kim, and Clarke himself. Season one premiered on Apple TV+ on October 10.

Critically, The Last Frontier struggled to gain momentum, opening with a 46% score on Rotten Tomatoes. While some reviewers praised its action sequences and performances, many criticised its pacing and narrative execution, particularly after a promising pilot episode.

The Hollywood Reporter wrote that after a promising pilot, the show “turns out not to be very much fun at all,” describing it as “a lumbering and padded journey that stretches two hours of story across 10 hours.” The review added that the series squandered its premise and left much of its “overqualified cast in the lurch.”

A similar sentiment came from RogerEbert.com, which noted that while the first episode raises expectations, “as the ten-episode season drags on, the pulpy thrills… give way to the kind of tedious bloat you can expect from your average Apple TV+ show.”

Fans echoed those criticisms on social media following the cancellation announcement. “It seemed like a one-season show,” one viewer wrote, while another admitted, “I honestly couldn’t get through the first episode.” A third added, “The first couple of episodes were really good, then it petered out.”

The Last Frontier season one is currently streaming on Apple TV+.
