Apple TV+ have announced a new project starring multi-Emmy, SAG, and Golden Globe award-winner Jennifer Aniston. The series is being written, executive produced, and showrun by Jennette McCurdy and Ari Katcher, and is inspired by McCurdy’s best selling memoir I’m Glad My Mom Died.
Published in 2022, McCurdy’s memoir documents her troubled career as a child star from its inception up until her retirement as a professional actor in 2017. A darkly honest read, the book delves into McCurdy’s difficult relationship with her abusive mother, her descent into disordered eating and alcoholism, and touches upon the Nickelodeon Dan Schneider scandal (though it does not name Schneider outright).
McCurdy began her acting career at eight years old, appearing in TV shows such as CSI, The X-Files, and Malcolm in the Middle, but she is most recognised for her work on the Nickelodeon channel as Sam Puckett in iCarly and Sam and Cat. Following her time with Nickelodeon, McCurdy starred in sci-fi series Between before quitting acting in order to focus on writing and directing.
Slated for ten episodes, the upcoming series is described as a “dramedy” which “will center on the codependent relationship between an 18-year-old actress in a hit kid’s show, and her narcissistic mother who relishes in her identity as ‘a starlet’s mother,’ set to be played by Aniston.” Aniston is also set to executive produce the show which marks her second collaboration with the streaming network following The Morning Show (season four of The Morning Show set to premiere on September 17).
The story originally began as a one woman show performed by McCurdy in 2020 and 2021 before it evolved into the book the series is set to adapt, which spent 80 weeks in the New York Times bestsellers list.
No other casting announcements have been made at this time.
