Following fan speculation, Resident Evil Requiem director Koshi Nakanishi has set the record straight, confirming that the game is not an open-world adventure.
With Resident Evil Requiem fast approaching, fan speculation has been rampant, with many fans speculating that the upcoming game would be an open-world game. However, in a new interview with Game Informer, director Koshi Nakanishi has firmly shut down expectations.
“[The development team] did just want to make clear one point,” Nakanishi told the website through an interpreter. “They’ve seen some speculation of whether there’s any open world elements in the game, and they just want to set the record straight that this isn’t an open world game.”
This is not the first time Naskanishi has commented on the possibility of an open-world aspect to Requiem. Back in June of 2025 via a developer diary video the director confirmed that the team had “spent some time experimenting” with the possibility of an open world but that “In the end, although we had some interesting concepts, we realised that it wasn’t what fans wanted to see or play. So we went back to the drawing board and created what led to Resident Evil Requiem”.
Resident Evil Requiem will follow a new protagonist, FBI analyst Grace Ashcroft, who will be teamed with returning character, fan favourite Leon S. Kennedy. While Requiem will not feature an open world there will be plenty of interesting twists in its gameplay as not only will players split their time between the two characters, but also two playstyles. In default gameplay, Grace’s are first-person while Leon’s segments are played in third. Earlier this month, Capcom dropped a 12-minute showcase giving fans their most in-depth look at the game to date.
Resident Evil Requiem launches on 27th February on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC
