New York quartet Geese have unveiled ‘100 Horses’, the third single off their upcoming album Getting Killed. The track comes at a pivotal time for the band, as they enjoy a steep increase in popularity – bolstered by a string of sold-out dates across the US and UK for both the band and frontman Cameron Winter, who also has a solo run on the horizon.
‘100 Horses’ starts as it means to go on – gracefully abrasive and sonically chaotic, as a jazz routine ushers Winter’s unmistakable, guttural vocals in. It’s a song that thrives on tension, building a sense of unease while still pulling the listener in with its wild energy. The lyrical content of the track is as unconventional as its sound – as Winter describes people concealing dire situations with joyful alternatives (“People / In times of war / Must go to the circus”).
The imagery of “100 horses dancing” affirms the track as an absurdist joyride. The band lean into the idea of an apocalypse to explore how we try to make sense of a world that’s senseless. Geese masterfully blend disorder and melody to create a track that is both compelling and enduring, setting an exciting precedent for their upcoming LP.
