Dodie has long been a national treasure for those who loved yellow ukuleles and gentle ballads during YouTube’s early 2010 boom. Ahead of her upcoming album Not for Lack of Trying, due 3 October 2025, she has shared a playful new single ‘Darling, Angel, Baby.’
This track is an affectionate ode to Dodie’s black-and-white cat, ‘Mrs’. Its four endearing nicknames—“Darling, Angel, Baby, Mrs.”—repeat across the song like a soothing mantra. Lines such as “As it turns out life is black and white” work as a double entendre, while “You’re such a cool cat we never disagree” could describe a beloved friend just as easily as a pet.
Flatmate Greta Isaac joins Dodie on vocals, their chemistry audible in the soft laughter that threads between choruses. Recorded in the comfort of her home, the track carries the cosy serenity that defines much of Dodie’s work. Soft percussion and layered harmonies even turn the playful “Meow / meow” into an other-worldly hug.
‘Darling, Angel, Baby’ concludes with the charming line “She loves her edamame”. This is a perfect sign-off from an artist who knows how to make the smallest moments sound enchanting.
