Mac DeMarco has released a new single titled ‘Home’, taken from his upcoming album Guitar, set for release in August 2025.
DeMarco has a warmth to his sound that permeates through the songs chord progressions, jazzy rhythms and ambient interludes. He offers listeners a sense of solace and comfort, even while navigating melancholic themes. This duality is what makes Mac so distinctive; his ability to translate complex emotions into soothing melodies, often without relying on lyrics.
The single captures how places once defined by comfort and closeness can become desolate and barren. Where there once was familiarity, only frail memories and faded relationships remain. DeMarco combines lyrical simplicity with a soft vocal tone to create a bittersweet atmosphere.
Particularly in the opening lyric —“These days I’d much rather be on my own” — there is a sense of resignation that sets the emotional tone early on. There is real power in his simplicity.
He also uses minimalism to support the visual aspects of his artistry. The latest album cover is a reflection of this: DeMarco sits in a dimly lit room with little more than his dog and guitar. Even the titles — Guitar and ‘Home’ — strip everything back to its rawest form.
This understated approach continues in the homemade video accompanying the single. Birds float across the water, intercut with quiet shots of DeMarco boating — the muted, unedited colouring echoing the song’s soft introspection.
‘Home’ serves as a gentle reminder to appreciate the quiet moments in life — the birds, the stillness, the passing light on water. Mac DeMarco skilfully weaves harmony into sorrow, making his music feel like a safe haven for listeners.
