Track Review: Orange County // Gorillaz

‘Orange County’ by Gorillaz is a track in their upcoming India-inspired album The Mountain, which perfectly captures the band’s talent for pairing bright, inviting sounds with weightier emotional themes. On the surface, the song feels light and upbeat, but the lyrics tell a more complex story. There’s a sense of longing and reflection running through the words, touching on ideas of death, longing, and loss (“You know the hardest thing is to say goodbye // To someone you love”). This contrast between sound and meaning makes the song especially compelling, as it asks the listener to look beyond its sunny exterior.

Musically, the track is rich and layered without ever feeling overwhelming. One of the most striking elements is the inclusion of the sitar by Anoushka Shankar. The sitar is subtly woven through the beats, but it hits hard and elevates the emotional impact of the song. It is a small detail that makes a big impact, showcasing the band’s knack for thoughtful collaboration, while also maintaining the theme and inspiration of the album.

Despite its emotional weight, the track ultimately feels hopeful. The upbeat melody, paired with the gentle whistle throughout the track, creates a sense of optimism and warmth amidst the heavy lyrics. This balance between emotion and positivity is reminiscent of my all-time favourite Gorillaz song, ‘On Melancholy Hill’, which shares the same ability to feel comfort within powerful emotion. ‘Orange County’ is a memorable listen, and hints at an album full of potential that is well worth the wait.
