The first official image of Sophie Turner as Lara Croft has been released.

Turner will play the iconic explorer and archaeologist in Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming Tomb Raider series, which the studio has confirmed is currently in production.

In this first glance of Turner as Croft, she is wearing the instantly-recognisable Tomb Raider ensemble—a tank top, shorts, leather fingerless gloves and leg-strapping holsters—with her hair pulled back into a French plait. She also dons a pair of red-tinted sunglasses, standing with both hands poised on her weapons.

The British actress is best known for her role as Sansa Stark in the hit TV adaptation of George R R Martin’s Game of Thrones, where she featured in 60 of the show’s 74 episodes.

Her newest show will be based on the famous video game series Tomb Raider, which was originally released back in the 90s and was one of the first to achieve such international fame with a female protagonist. Turner will be the third actress to portray Lara Croft on screen, following in the footsteps of Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander.

Alongside Turner, the Tomb Raider series will also star multi-award winning actress Sigourney Weaver, best known for her roles in James Cameron’s Aliens and his Avatar franchise, as well as Jason Isaacs (most recently seen in The White Lotus and The Salt Path) and British icon Celia Imrie, who UK viewers will remember from 2025’s The Celebrity Traitors

Fleabag and Killing Eve producer Phoebe Waller-Bridge writes and produces the show. Her experience playing the role of Helena in 2023’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny hopefully puts her in good stead for creating a story following an adventurous archaeologist.

With production in its early stages, Amazon MGM Studios has yet to release a video teaser or full trailer, but it’s likely viewers can expect action, adventure, and puzzles—probably solved in exotic locations. Whether the streaming platform will reinvent the franchise completely or follow previous plotlines is yet to be seen.

No release date is confirmed for the series yet; however, online speculation suggests we can expect to stream the show at some point in the latter half of next year, at the very earliest.
