Track Review: Gossip // Confidence Man & JADE

The flip phone gossip culture of the early 2000s meets an 80s disco beat in Confidence Man & JADE’s new single ‘Gossip.’

Soundtracking your strut around the city, the bouncy bass is accompanied by lyrics like “Gossip, oh, my god, alright, alright, alright.” and “I love talking about people. Me too, it’s so fun.”

This single is theatrical in its line delivery, as the singers’ conversational tone towards each other is almost like overhearing a cat fight unfold at the bar of a gay club. This is heard in the he-said-she-said of “oh my god what did Tina say?” with the response “Tina said you’re a c**t.”

The addictive bass loop is paired with a Mexican guitar which mixes Latin melodrama with disco funk. This song has a provocative edge to it that has recently been reintroduced in songs like Chappell Roan’s ‘Super Graphic Ultra Modern Girl’ and Charli XCX’s ‘Girl, so Confusing.’

The hook “when you walk around town girl, why you gotta top me like that?” is repeated in the chorus, and sums up this confrontational and cheeky disco hit. It captures that catty performative sass that once overruled the pop scene, in the 2000s. Every diva is bound to have ‘Gossip’ by Confidence Man & JADE playing in their wired headphones whilst strutting downtown.
