American singer-songwriter Reneé Rapp has finally listened to her fans’ pleas to return to the studio with the release of audacious new track ‘Leave Me Alone’.
‘Leave Me Alone’ is a powerful statement-fuelled track from Rapp, with a very noughties-grunge sounding arrangement. The chaotic backtrack mirrors the lyrics of the song.
In the track, Reneé references her old show, Sex Lives of College Girls, “I took my sex life with me, now the show ain’t f*cking”. Not only does this insinuate that Reneé was responsible for the show being cancelled after her departure, the dig also hints that the upcoming album may open us to a side to Reneé which is more risqué than what was showcased in her debut album ‘Snow Angel’. This is amplified earlier in the song when she sings, “Even line my lips to match my nipples”.
The single marks the beginning of a new era for Reneé Rapp, with her also announcing a new album, ‘BITE ME’, due to be released on 1st August 2025.
Reneé repeats the line, “Leave me alone, b*tch, I wanna have fun” throughout the track – again, reiterating that this album may be more playful compared to the emotional ballads that we’ve seen from her in the past. In support of the track’s release, Reneé teased an NDA on her website that could be signed by fans, which is referenced in the song, “Sign a hunnid NDAs, but I still say something”.
Ultimately, the track is a big hint that Reneé Rapp is rebelling against someone, potentially her manager, or possibly her fans, trying to control her life. The repetition of “I wanna have fun”, as well as “I’m so sick of it all”, suggests that Reneé is trying to enjoy her youth rather than follow what she is instructed to do. Alternatively, these simple lines could be foreshadowing the style of the upcoming album, indicating that it will be a mix of messy, yet playful tracks.
The rebellious vibe of the song is further delivered in the accompanying music video, which shows Reneé first at a party, and then, after hitting her head, imagining herself taking part in a huge pillow fight alongside a group of girls. The fight and destruction caused in the video could be a reference to how Reneé intends to stop listening to those that criticise her and fight back.
As a whole. ‘Leave Me Alone’ is a strong debut track for the new album that showcases Reneé Rapp’s dry sense of humour and talent to implement her own tone into her music. The song is an expression of frustration, which will hopefully be further explored in the upcoming album.
