A major update from the Icelandic-Chinese jazz-pop singer-songwriter Laufey, was announced last Thursday: the release of a new single titled ‘Tough Luck’, for her upcoming album A Matter of Time which is set to release later this year on 22 August 2025.

The track ‘Tough Luck’ opens with her instantly recognizable characteristic hushed piano notes and smooth strings, combining to produce a comforting soundtrack. However, don’t be fooled by the song’s initial warmth; ‘Tough Luck’ has a subtle undertone of mischievous resistance that makes it stand out. Her story of love and misadventure seems to be a subtle wink directed at the audience.

Laufey keeps using words to create vivid imagery in her lyrics, similar to her music in the past. In this track however, she manages the intricacies of attraction and the occasional slip-up with a refreshing sense of self-awareness and even a hint of sardonic humor, rather than wallowing in despair. Lines such as “My intuition wore its Sunday best / but Cupid clearly failed the dress code test” highlight this endearing combination of humor and emotional openness.

The arrangement feels naturally light despite its signature sophistication. Without ever dominating her beautiful vocals, the song is propelled forward by the subtly added rhythmic pulse of what sounds like a brushed snare drum. Though as always, the primary focus is Laufey’s voice, a honeyed, smooth instrument that conveys the story’s sensitivity and underlying determination.

Despite having Laufey’s own musical DNA, the track ‘Tough Luck’ doesn’t seem to be a repeat of her previous songs. The aural palette has gradually broadened, indicating further artistic development, and the delivery has grown more assured. The song has an undeniable charm that can draw in new listeners and will undoubtedly appeal to her present fan base.

Laufey’s song ‘Tough Luck’ is ultimately a great addition to her catalog. It is a charming and sophisticated tune that is both comforting and subtly potent. You smile and get the feeling that even if romance doesn’t work out, a little self-assurance and a beautiful song can make things a bit less…tough.
