Actor Ralph Ineson, who appeared in Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag, has responded to a recent report that Ubisoft has cancelled an Assassin’s Creed game which would have been set during the Reconstruction period in America.
On X, Ineson reposted details of the cancelled game and responded saying “Once again, f*** off.”
In Assassin’s Creed IV, Ineson voices pirate Charles Vane, who begins as a close ally to the game’s hero Edward Kenway, however turns into a major antagonist and threat to Kenway in the later game. Multiple leaks and rumours have been circulating amongst the Assassin’s Creed community about a long-awaited remake of Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag. It’s certainly interesting that Ineson is vocal in his annoyance of the project’s cancellation, could this mean he was back in recording for other Assassin’s Creed projects?
A recent report published by Game File, discusses the cancellation of Ubisoft’s ambitious new project with current and former employees of the company. This new instalment of the popular series would have taken place during the 1860s and 1870s, in a post-Civil War America. Gamers would play as a formerly enslaved Black man from the South, who is recruited by the Assassins. The fight for justice would see the former-slave confront the emergence of the Ku Klux Klan, among other enemies.
According to the interviewed employees, the cancellation came after negative online backlash to the Black-protagonist and ‘African Samurai’ – Yasuke – from Assassin’s Creed: Shadows. It also seems concerns around the current US political climate further solidified Ubisoft’s decision. This would’ve been the most modern setting of the franchise and arguably the most ambitious game developed; therefore, it is a great shame that Ubisoft seems to be “bowing to controversy.”
It seems not only Ineson has taken to social media to respond to this unfortunate news. As fans of the franchise who were enthusiastic about the storyline and historical setting of this instalment, they have expressed their disappointment, suggesting the project could have been the best in the series.
