Build A Rocket Boy, the Edinburgh-based studio behind this year’s sci-fi action title MindsEye, has released a massive fourth update to the game that continues to fix several gameplay and technical issues that have been present in the game since launch across platforms.
Upon launch in June of this year, MindsEye was heavily criticised for a heavy presence of game-breaking bugs and performance problems. Despite a financially successful launch, the studio would begin a round of layoffs later the same month, though a statement given by Build A Rocket Boy to IGN addressing these layoffs assured players that the studio will focus on fixing the game for the foreseeable future.
This sentiment has been reaffirmed in the patch notes for the latest update to MindsEye, with the team stating: “We remain committed to refining MindsEye and enhancing the gameplay experience. Ongoing updates will continue to be shared”. The update contains major fixes to NPC behaviour, VFX, audio, and UI, as well as tweaking gameplay elements like aim assist.
Despite Build A Rocket Boy’s commitment to regularly updating the game, the controversial launch of MindsEye has, according to IGN, caused issues internally with the game’s publisher, IO Interactive. IOI, most well-known for creating the Hitman games and developing the upcoming Bond title 007: First Light, published MindsEye as the first title in the IOI Partners initiative. CEO Hakan Abrak told IGN that this partnership formed as IOI “just wanted to help them distribute the game”, but that the game’s reception was “what we didn’t hope for at IOI Partners”.
Abrak also hinted that this ordeal will lead to the end of the IOI Partners projects, though IOI will continue to publish their own titles. Issues between Build A Rocket Boy and IOI also flared up earlier this year when a MindsEye crossover mission with the Hitman series was indefinitely delayed with little explanation.
MindsEye is available to purchase and play now for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
