Nintendo is set to bring back two of its most acclaimed 3D platformers, with Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 confirmed for release on both Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 on October 2, 2025. The announcement, made during the company’s September 12 Nintendo Direct, is part of celebrations marking the 40th anniversary of the Mario franchise.

The pair of Wii-era titles will be offered as a single physical bundle for $70 or individually for $40 via the Nintendo eShop. Buyers will receive a free performance update for Switch 2, enabling 4K resolution, while the standard Switch version will run at 1080p in docked mode.

Nintendo also promises smoother performance, an updated interface, a new in-game music player, and an assist mode for newcomers, alongside the choice between button-based or motion controls. Notably, both games will expand Rosalina’s in-game storybook with fresh lore pages — a move some fans believe could tie into the Super Mario Galaxy film scheduled for April 2026.

Initially released in 2007 and 2010, respectively, Super Mario Galaxy and its sequel redefined 3D platforming with planet-hopping stages, gravity-based mechanics, a strong narrative presence through Rosalina and the Lumas, and unique planetary designs that offered rarely seen variety in the series.

The series remains a high point for the Mario brand, having won multiple Game of the Year awards and maintaining a loyal fan base. This marks the first time Super Mario Galaxy 2 will be available on modern Nintendo hardware, which was notably absent from the limited Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection that included only the first game.

The remasters arrive amid Nintendo’s wider anniversary program, which includes new releases such as Mario Tennis Fever, a special edition of Super Mario Wonder for Switch 2, and a dedicated exhibition at the Nintendo Museum. Nintendo will also release two new amiibo figures — Mario with Luma and Rosalina with Lumas — in April 2026 to coincide with the movie launch, each priced at $40.

Preorders for the games are live at major retailers, including Amazon, Walmart, Target, and Best Buy. While some players may baulk at paying again for content already partially included in Super Mario 3D All-Stars, the addition of 4K support, modern controls, and new lore content ensures the Galaxy series will play a central role in Nintendo’s efforts to mark four decades of its most recognisable hero.
