The latest Nintendo Direct, this September, has announced some exciting news, including a new game for Mario’s dinosaur companion. Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is a 2D adventure platformer, due to release in spring 2026 for the Nintendo Switch 2. The short trailer of the game showed off a new, cute, and vibrant art style, which fans have praised. It seems the game’s theme has moved away from the yarn aesthetics of previous Yoshi titles, such as Yoshi’s Crafted World (2019) and Woolly World (2015).
The game’s announcement came as part of the franchise’s 40th anniversary. Although the segment was short, it still gave fans great insight into the gameplay and storyline we expect to see in the finished game next spring. Yoshi’s new adventure is set inside a storybook, or more accurately, a talking encyclopedia called Mr. E. When jumping into the book, Yoshi will be able to explore a whole new world and levels, full of secrets, animals and new friends to meet!
The teaser placed emphasis on the unusual creatures among the different levels, and showed a documenting system to track which friends you’ve met along the way. Yoshi will gain special abilities through the various creatures and animals, which will help you advance through the storyline. There seems to be lots of mystery left in the game, and it already looks like a visual pleasure to play!
Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is rated PEGI 7 on Nintendo’s official website, which is not a surprise, as the child-friendly themes and aesthetics of the game reflect the franchise’s younger audience. Although older fans are hoping this new platformer will come with a degree of challenge, something which has been lacking in previous instalments.
